Lane Bryant, Geico, etc

October 22nd, 2015 at 02:14 am

After work today I stopped by a local Lane Bryant store to pick up my order. Upon walking in, I saw signs advertising "up to 80% off" ... and so I started looking. I ended up trying on 5 different items - two of which I liked well enough to check the prices. Yeah .. no. Neither of them were liked well enough to pay the asking price (neither of which were actually on sale, even though I pulled them from a sale rack ...)

I've had good luck in the past shopping a LB sale, but not today. I did try on one of my new bras before leaving to make sure it fit well. Smile

On FB I belong to a MMM group. Someone started a thread a few days ago asking about car insurance. I mentioned I'd been with Geico for 12++ years, and even with shopping around every so often, hadn't found anything cheaper for me.

So ... someone mentioned that they too have Geico. BUT they mentioned something I'd had NO IDEA about. If you own a share of Berkshire Hathaway stock (BRK.b) you can get a 8% discount on your Geico insurance.

All you need is ONE share (currently at about $134.) I pay about $218 every 6 months, so it would net me a $22 or so discount - so would take about 3 years to equal the share price. But maybe the share will go up in value?? I'm debating on whether I want to do this or not .. but wanted to share for others who might have higher car insurance than I do.

I redeemed $10 from Pact today.

Update - I just got off the phone with Geico. I've actually had the policy for 16 years. Smile My rates are as low as they can go - the only available discount would be if I were to get renter's insurance. Or ... if I were to add a second vehicle/get married.

Oh well, it was worth a shot. Big Grin

Oh, that is good to know. I left Geico a year or two ago because I got a better deal with Mercury. But I might price it again, and see if that 8% discount would make a difference.

At any rate, I will file that under "useful information". Thanks, FT. Smile

You don't have renters insurance? Did you price that?

I used to have renter's insurance ... but the lowest amount they'd insure for was still way more than my stuff would ever be worth. I think I haven't had it since I was laid off at the oil and gas company actually. It may be time to think about getting it again - I do realize I may be being penny foolish with not having it.

Thanks for the tip on BRK.B stock and Geico. I'm going to give Geico a call to see if I'd get an additional discount if I bought a share.

Great info! I'm with Geico as well, but being in NYC, my monthly payment is more than your 6 month policy!!! Purchasing 1 share of the stock would pay for itself within a year for me. I don't currently have a taxable investment account - I believe most of them have a minimum to open - know of any that do not? I'm not ready for stocks yet, still working on getting rid of debt!!!

I used to really like Lane Bryant but I feel most of their styles are on the frumpy side now. I'm not sure why all plus size clothing has to have big loud patterns. I do however love their bras - so bummed I missed your post about the sale (by a few hours!) I'm sure I got an email about it but probably deleted without reading. Sigh.

SCFR - hope it works for you!

Liz - I agree about plus size clothing styles being so loud or frumpy. It's rare I find anything I actually *like* - most of the time it's a case of finding something that fits AND works okay with my style. If I were four sizes smaller ... I'd probably be a clotheshorse.

Ouch! That is a high car insurance payment. I hope the discount works for you!

Called Geico and found out that, with all of the other discounts already in place, the premium we're currently paying is already at rock-bottom. Buying a share of BRK.B stock would not help us reduce our premium. But hopefully someone else will see this and take advantage of it.

Isn't that kind of bitter sweet to hear that you have the lowest possible rates? Smile
