Ten Years and a ?

January 22nd, 2015 at 12:44 am

I realized that I missed my ten-year blogaversary! January 17, 2005 I posted my very first blog here. Very few people remain here who were there then.

In some ways I'm better off financially than I was in 2005 - more retirement/stock savings. But a good bit less in cash savings. My job has fairly similar benefits, although I'm making about 15k less than I did in 2005.

I had no debt in 2005, and I have no debt now. Back then I was in uber savings mode preparing to quit teaching. Now I'm in sort of uber savings mode preparing to retire and buy a home ... in 15 years or so.

Interesting to see where I'll be in ten years from now.

----
Today at work one of my coworkers pointed out to me that there is a librarian position posted on the city website ending on Friday. This is not someone I'm cozy with to say the least. She knows I have my librarian degree. She also has a friend who wanted my job - and applied twice for it.

How would you take this?

    Happy Blogoversary!

I have no idea how to take that comment. It could be simply she is simply relating something she knows about (the job and someone who applied) to you (someone she knows was a librarian). I'm going to hope that is it. I assume you aren't interested in the job?

No, it requires weekend hours - which more than likely means Saturdays. It pays $2/hr more (than I make now) for being a Library Clerk. Plus I'm not sure if I'd have to restart my 6 month probation period, which I Would NOT be interested in doing.

I hope that's all it was. Her just letting me know ... it just felt really bizarre.

How to take this? If you want a new position, then check it and see if you're interested. Why would I care if I like the person that told me about it or not? Unless you think she is trying to set you up to fail somehow, but that's where you need to research the position, or at least get more info during an interview process.

Single Guy - My first take on it was that she's trying to get me out of there so her friend can try for the job again. There's more backstory to this, but can't really go into it.

Oh, I thought you meant the friend had tried for the library position...not your current position. Yikes that does seem a little odd.

I think she is indeed trying to help her friend out, but who cares? Shoot, she might start job-hunting for you, and the next one she brings for your evaluation could be even better! Even knowing her motives, I'd nicely say "Thank you for letting me know! It turns out that this one required weekend hours so it's not a good fit, but I'm always willing to consider my options. I appreciate your thinking of me."

I was here about that time but took longer to write an entry. I usually just read others entries, much like I do now.

CCF - I guess I wasn't too clear about it.

Jenn - I did tell her thanks for pointing it out to me.

Kiki - I'm glad you're writing entries now.

Wow, happy birthday to the blog! Double-digits! Smile
If you are interested in the job, apply. If not, don't apply.

I have a love-hate relationship (though that really implies passion, and there isn't any) with someone who is a "helper" and in the past has tried to fix problems that I didn't know I had! (Like trying to get my child on a filled team and arranging to have his wife make alterations on a dress that my child hadn't purchased). He gleaned issues from casually things I said (Like, "Oh, A isn't participating in basketball at the Y because we missed the deadline" and my conversation on the cell phone to daughter, "Whatever you buy, please make sure it fits because we don't have time to make it to the tailor.") Yikes!!

    And I like Jenn's response!!

Laura - that would be annoying! I really like my boss here - other than the benefits she's pro one of the good points. When she retires I may decide to look elsewhere. Otherwise, one never knows what kind of boss you'll get.

Petunia - I noticed that too. I guess the archives only keep 9 years worth. I'd actually wanted to go back and read some from then.

I'm all for moving up and onward to better places, so I would probably thank her for the "helpful" tips.
