Front USB plug not working, Book talk, question/rant

April 10th, 2010 at 12:12 am

The past few weeks the internet has just stopped working for me at various times. It would start working again after I restarted my computer, but it was very annoying. This afternoon it stopped again, and the restart didn't work.

So, after exploring a bit, I realized that my USB receiver wasn't showing a light. Some more exploring and experimentation revealed that the front USB plug on my computer seems to no longer be working. So, I plugged in my USB hub to the back of the computer, and have internet again.

I have a funny feeling that my computer is not going to last much longer. If it can just survive till I'm out of school and making a real living again ...

Of course, with the way things are going, I'm going to have everything breaking down on me the moment I start getting a real paycheck again - my car, my computer, my health. It may be an expensive few months. Just so it waits till I can afford it!

---
I did my book talk today at the library. (I mentioned some of the books already here - Hoggee, One-handed Catch, and Runt). It went really well.

---
Okay, I have a question. I turned in my report on my Story time assignment on March 25. It was due March 28. Unfortunately, it didn't save properly as a Word document. On April 4 my professor returned it to me and told me that I needed to turn it in again saved as a Word document. I did that within minutes of receiving her email.

I have not received a grade for it yet -- but it is marked as Late on the submissions tab.

Am I wrong to be upset that she has marked it late? I don't feel that it is my fault that she waited so long to look at it. I do concede that it is my fault for not double checking that it was saved in the proper format - but should that make it be marked late?!

This same teacher marked off 5 points on a journal response because she said that I hadn't mentioned a speech. I wrote back to her and told her that I could see why she thought I hadn't done so, because it wasn't written "so and so said..." but more of a response. I then included a quote from my journal showing where I was talking about the speech. She never responded to me, except to put my grade up minus the 5 points.

I'm not very happy about this, because I have to have this same professor for at least 2 more classes.

I'm afraid I'm going to get a B in this class because of the Story time late grade (if she ever gets around to putting up a score!)

It depends on the value of the mark. If it's worth 80% of your grade and reduces your grade from an A to an B+ then I would petition it. Otherwise it might not be worth it if it's only worth a small percentage of your grade overall.

Reminds me of a former manager that I couldn't stand. Always wanted everything "yesterday," but then wouldn't look at anything for MONTHs. I should have just piles of pretend work on his desk to get him off my back. Since he never looked at anything anyway. Wink
I'd say in general, it might be fair to mark late, but I agree with the annoyance of it not being looked at for many days. A little on the nit picky side. Let's put it this way - I work in a deadline-driven field. So I Can understand the teacher's viewpoint. But, I don't get the feeling you are working towards a deadline-driven field, either. So, you know. Seems pretty nit picky, considering.

    Wow,
It might be enough to take my grade from an A to a B, depending on how late she marks it. I can only miss 25 points total and still have an A.

    MonkeyMama,

I guess I can understand her marking it late since it was turned in in an incorrect format, so there's no way for her to know I did it correctly and completely the first time. I'm just curious as to how late she's going to mark it. One day late = minus 10 points. Two days' late = minus 20 points. Three days late = zero. So, technically it was 6 days late by the time she emailed me.

You're right, librarians aren't exactly in a big deadline centric field. Smile

Seems it would be fair to mark it "one day late," in this case. Six days late and a 0? Sounds unfair to me!

I hate the thought of losing ten whole points (re: 25 points gone and it's a B) but I agree, losing ten points probably would be a fair thing. Ugh. I just hope she gives me the grade soon ... the suspense is killing me.

As the wife of a teacher, the wrong format is a major time waster for him. It is equivalent to coming to class and asking the teacher if you can print out your assignment.

As a consolation, do your grades really matter? Are you in jeopardy to lose a scholarship? Are you applying to Law or Medical School? Otherwise, no one cares what grades you get as long as you pass.

    Sns,

I agree that the paper being in the wrong format is a pain. I thought it was saved in the correct format - unfortunately, it wasn't.
Grades do matter - to me. Getting a B wouldn't be the end of the world, but this is an easy class. I want to graduate with all A's if possible. If I have to, I'll take one B. I missed out on wearing honor cords at college grad (long story) so if there are any honors cords at the masters level -- I want them.

I was a teacher for 8 years. I always tried to err in favor of the student. Of course, all but one-year was with six and seven year olds. Smile
