In the Mail; DVD program

December 11th, 2009 at 01:59 am

Tonight when I got home I found that I had another textbook arrive. 3 down, 2 to go. Smile

I also had a package from a dentist's office. They sent a brochure, a letter worth $50 off my first appointment, and ... a toothbrush! I can always use a free toothbrush. Smile

A few days ago I downloaded the newest version of AVG. As it was downloading, it told me that I needed to update a DVD playing program called Roxio something or other. I looked everywhere in my computer, but didn't see anything by that name. So ... thinking that Windows Media Player plays DVD's, I made the oh so smart decesion to just delete any programs with DVD in the title.

AVG finished installing perfectly at that point.

Last night I decided I wanted to watch a movie. I put my movie in, and hit "play DVD" in WMP. I got the error message saying it couldn't play DVD's - that I needed to change my screen resolution and colors. So ... I tried that. I tried all possible combination. Still didn't work.

In the end, I watched a movie off of the Netflix streaming.

I'm hoping there's an easy and inexpensive solution to my dumb mistake. Anyone? Pretty please?

Um, OK, I guess this is kind of confusing.

Short answer: Download and install Windows Media 11.

If possible. Don't know what version of Windows you have or is needed, but for DVDs, that's what I use, and it works beautifully.

Roxio is a commercial DVD burning software (which I guess also plays DVDs), and deleting that in itself shouldn't be a problem. The problem is likely that you also deleted a related VOB/ACC codec, basically a library type software needed to decode and read DVD discs.

Installing any major DVD playback software should also re-install the required codec.

As for AVG, I used to be a proponent of it, but the the scan takes a horrifyingly long time. I'm currently using Microsoft Security Essentials, which is Microsoft's latest anti-virus software that they provide for free.... You may have to authenticate with them first before you can download, but after that, it's slick and fast. I don't know how well it protects compared to AVG, but scans are extremely fast, and again, it's free.

    Thanks BA,

I have version 11 on my computer now. Should I uninstall and then reinstall it?

I'm not sure how much I'm liking AVG lately myself. It slows my computer way down when scanning, and like you mentioned, it is *slow*. I'll check out essentials - thanks for the suggestion.
