How Not to Die AKA How to Not Have Lots of Medical Bills + Fender Bender!

September 6th, 2016 at 02:43 am

So last weekend I saw the book How Not to Die (by Dr Greger of nutritionfacts.org) mentioned in a couple different places. I put the audiobook on my library reserve list, and picked it up on Saturday.

Wow. I have to say I'm super impressed so far. And I'm only about 6 chapters into it.

One thing I already plan to do is add 4 brazil nuts each month to my diet. I also am adding a teaspoon of tumeric to my smoothies - I'd already been using tumeric on the roasted veggies, etc., but after hearing all the things it can do ... Yeah, a teaspoon in my smoothies! Probably will add cinnamon too.

My mom and my brother have both agreed to read/listen to it and then we can discuss it together. DH is a little bit more reluctant ... Smile though he did somewhat patiently somewhat listen to me talking about it this afternoon. Smile

So.. I am officially giving up soda. 100%. Not even a little sip of DH's at a restaurant. I also am limiting myself to no more than $2/week on any kind of junk food. Been spending way too much fun money on it/ eating WAY too much of it.

This is Day 1. Maybe I'll try to update a little like CB - though probably not daily. Smile

I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in preventing the top 15 diseases that kill you ... Smile And saving money on medical stuff.

---
So DH called me tonight and let me know that he got into a fender bender. His fault. Low speed. He's fine - but the person he hit (beater of a truck) appears to be claiming injury. Sigh.

This will be interesting to see what happens.

Now to figure out where the $150 ticket/court costs will come from.

----
Almost forgot! I actually got ALL of my thank you notes written tonight!! Some of them are even addressed!

Now they are on the counter waiting for DH to add his signature, and a short note of his own on some of them. Then I'll get them addressed and stop at a post office.

Woo hoo! Finally will have that albatross off my neck! Smile

I'm so sorry to hear DH got into a fender bender but glad he's ok! Hope it doesn't cost you guys too much.

Awesome job on those thank you notes!! It will feel good to have those off your mind. I added tumeric to our veggies last night.

Well, I guess I'll put tumeric on my grocery list. What does it do?

Grand to have Thank You notes completed. I recall how excited you were to receive an 'Instant Pot' [pressure cooker] and wonder if it's used a lot and living up to expectations. I miss your photos and descriptions of meals resulting from your cooking classes, a wonderful reminder to try new ideas. With that in mind, I made Cajun style Gumbo demonstrated on You Tube for a Labor Day Pot Luck event. While cooked on stove top, I chose it mostly because it seemed a good candidate to transport and serve in a crock pot.

My Deals dollar store started carrying tumeric, $1, good deal. More often, though we use Madras curry which has a lot of tumeric in it. Love the umammi, buttery-meaty flavor curry gives stir fried vegetables, spinach, potatoes, noodles, rice, any carby dish I guess. My friends from Pakistan make a gravy of it with drained yogurt and serve cauliflower just swimming in it. Mmm, so good.

Me too on the Tumeric. Inflammation is my issue that I am hoping it will help with. I do enjoy curry also. But adding to smoothies is a great idea!

I've never heard of this doctor but I'm skeptical of any claims that this or that ingredient will prevent/cure illnesses. However, I can't think of any doctor that would argue with giving up soda and cutting down on junk food, so those are great goals!

Also, I looked up medical uses of turmeric and saw this helpful page, which includes precautions for people with diabetes: http:// umm.edu/health/medical/altmed/herb/turmeric

Good job on the thank you notes. Sorry about DH's fender bender and the person claiming injury. Hope it isn't a leech.

I read Dr. Greger's book earlier in the year. It's great, I agree. He mostly advocates a plant-based diet, the supplements are secondary, however the medical research studies on certain supplements like turmeric are compelling.

    Thanks VS. Me too.

CCF - Thanks, it definitely does feel good! That's cool you added tumeric. Smile
CB - One of the things i it fights inflamation - for example arthritis. I don't remember the other things he mentioned, but it was one thing after another that it helps. It sounds like its something about the yellow coloring of it. He uses tons of studies done in major medical journals to back up his views.

    Trying - Thanks, me too.

Snafu, I haven't used it a whole lot yet, but the times I have used it, it has worked really well. I've cooked rice in it, sauteed multiple dishes, steamed sweet potatoes, made a one pot dish, etc.

Joan - our Dollar store carries it too. Smile I've been putting it in lots of things, but now plan on doing it even more so.

Ceejay - His main claim is that a plant based diet is the best bet against preventing/halting or reversing multiple health issues. He backs it up with lots of studies done on various groups. There really are no bad side effects from following his advice, so ... Smile I'll have to take a look at that page you found. Thanks!

Rob - Thanks. Me too! DH had a rotten night overall Monday night. Frown
PS - I like that he basicaly says that supplements are a waste of money. I've felt that way, but wasn't sure if it was just because I don't like spending money on stuff. Smile I'm looking forward to getting to the second part of the book.

Soo, the police showed up and ticketed your hubby? Hmm, that does complicate things. However, it depends on how far he's going to try to push for punitive damages.

I had that happen to me one time like many, many years ago. I didn't get ticketed though I was at fault. Anyways, best of luck on that.

  13. PatientSaver Says:
    1473252557

Yeah, I do want to cut back on supplements, Laura, altho for a vegan, B12 is absolutely essential. I will keep taking the turmeric but other than that, no more supplements!

  14. Frugaltexan75 Says:
    1473264649

Tabs - yeah, the guy was on the phone to the police as he got out of his truck. Rotten luck. Both times I've bin a fender bender that was my fault, the other people just let it go. Smile
PS - I use nutritional yeast for B12, but do still take a supplement for it. Also melatonin to sleep...
