Monday Report - Sales, Doctor, Goodwill, Visit

February 17th, 2015 at 12:46 am

The lady who said she wanted my DVDs yesterday came by with the $30. I had just lain down for a nap (not feeling that great) when she knocked on my door - so I missed it. Luckily she hadn't gotten too far away when I heard a ding letting me know I had a FB message - checked it and was able to get her to come back!

I called the place I have had a term life insurance policy at for the past 5 years and canceled it. It was due to renew on 3/15, so I was running out of time to cancel it before being charged another year's premium. (I'm going to be covered by my work life insurance as of 3/5 and can take it with me if I leave.)

---
I got in contact with an actual person at the doctor's office today. Looks like my thyroid is under control now with the current dosage! My Vitamin D level was really low which is why they prescribed me Vitamin D pills (one a week for 8 weeks, then retest.) One somewhat surprise was that my lipid panel showed my cholesterol was high 258? I think. The nurse suggested fish oil capsules ... yuck, no!

I know what I've got to do ... I just have to *really* cut out most of the junkfood/sugary junk I've been stress eating. I also need to get much more consistent with my exercise. 20-25 minutes of walking at work isn't enough.

My weight and my numbers are telling me I need to do something different.

I've just got to figure out how to rewire my brain for what I go for when I'm stressed out.

----
Stopped by Goodwill today and dropped off 4 boxes of books and 1 box of miscellaneous items. Also broke down several boxes and threw away a few others.

My living room is now empty of boxes. I do need to get a two-shelf bookshelf for the things that aren't fitting on my one bookshelf in the living room.

The futon I was trying to buy from someone on FB yesterday has been sold Frown It was $25 and looked in pretty good shape. I'll just have to keep looking.

My visit with the pastor this morning went well. We talked nearly two hours! I really was trying to be succinct, but there was a lot of backstory needed ... He gave me some helpful suggestions and told me to let him know if I needed to meet again. I'm really glad I did it.

You were productive today! I'm glad your visit with the pastor went well. I would definitely take him up on the offer to talk again if needed. Exercise and losing weight can make a huge difference in cholesterol levels. There are fish capsules that don't give that fishy taste or the burp that has given them a bad rap.

    Hey Laura

I totally empathize with the brain rewire you mentioned when you feel stressed-I too turn to junk food so..my rewire is pretty simple-first do something ( anything) physical-think jumping jacks/situps/pushups/jog in place-it will give you an energy burst and delay reaching/yearning for those "forbidden" items- then if you are still feeling stressed..reach for something..anything that is healthier-even if it is just a little bit healthier-for me it is helpful to not have those go-to temptations in the house...after a while you brain and body will start to weaken the stress-junk food bond and build up the stress-exercise bond..also..it is helpful to figure out WHAT is stressing you out so much and try to reduce THAT in your life altogether..Good Luck!!! hope some or any of this helps...

I think you have identified the root cause of your high cholesterol, more sweet/junk food than your body can tolerate. Would you consider writing out a list of snacks/finger foods that help your cholesterol numbers, broccoli spears come to mind? I'd go for the fish oil capsules shot term as taking Lipitor is expensive and has lots of negative side effects. At least try it for two weeks.

Wonderful that you had a positive experience talking to the pastor and have a solid resource to talk to. I hope you'll mke it a regular part of your activities. Can you volunteer to help in the church/congregational library? Teach lessons?

    Thanks all.

As for the fish capsules - I don't want to take them because I don't eat fish at all.

Yes, I'd much rather get control of my cholesterol through diet/exercise than medicine!

Definitely try diet and exercise first, but bear in mind that some individuals cannot control cholesterol except through medication. I know, I am one of them!

Krill oil is another option, but I guess they are critters, too. Anyway, I think the evidence about fish oil is inconclusive, so I wouldn't worry about it. Get your diet under control and keep watching your numbers.

Man am I a bit jealous that you have no more boxes in your living room. Mine is all boxes from the move last week! (and probably will be for a while longer.)

I believe flax seed oil is supposed to be good for cholesterol. I put some in my salad.
