Various and Assundry

December 8th, 2009 at 12:08 am

Back when I first moved in, I managed to capture pictures of the two dogs and one of the cats. However, the second cat proved to be quite elusive to having photos taken of him. On Sunday, inexplicably, Max, the cat, came into my room and laid on my bed. That is where he stayed for a number of hours, mostly sleeping.

Without further ado, here is Max:

----
In the forums I asked for ideas on how to best winter proof the sliding glass patio door which my bed is right next to. Several people suggested plastic, and another suggested insulation plus plastic.

When I made the suggestion to my landlady last night, she did not care for the idea of insulation out in the open. Said something about fiberglass. I didn't push it because at that point I could tell she wasn't in a good mood.

Today when I got home I found this:

My landlady had covered up the sliding glass doors with plywood and cardboard (as well as the windows on another wall). It is actually warmer in here. Now all I need to do is get a little space heater and I think I'll be able to live with it.

Any suggestions for space heaters for small spaces? (100 square feet or so)

----
The knit hat ($1) I'd bought last week at the dollar store was good, except that it didn't cover my ears. So today after work I went hunting for a hat which would cover my ears. I found this ($5) at Big Lots (and got a scarf ($4) too):

Love my fashion statement? Hah! So do I! (At least my ears will be nice and toasty when walking the dogs!)

Oh! They also had the gloves where you can take the top off and expose your fingertips - pre-made for $3!

I'm quite happy with my $1 solution I made by cutting off the fingertips of just the thumb and forefinger. Smile

----
And last, but certainly not least ... drum roll please ...... I got my grade back on my Barefoot Running paper! Big Grin If you haven't guessed already, I got an A.

If you care to give it a gander, you can read it here: http://docs.google.com/View?id=dfc49ps8_0dqx4mjdf

I need to probably add some pictures and such to it to make it easier on the eyes when reading - but for my assignment I could only do 4 pages for the position statement, and I used every bit of that. Smile

Wow, I thought when you mentioned barefoot running it was a euphemism or some such thing. I didn't realize you were referring to literally running barefoot! Ha ha! Great paper. Smile

That is a cute cat! And I think it is great that your landlady took care of getting you a warmer room. I would second the fiberglass problem. We had it everywhere in our basement when we added the insulation to our water heater. If you did go that route at some future point, you would want insulation with backing on both sides.

Thanks about Max - he is a cutie. He's back in my room right now and isn't quite sure what to make of the cardboard. He was even trying to pull it down a bit ago.

Thanks for the tip about insulation having backing on both sides. I think once I get a heater in here plus with the covering I have, it'll be workable. If not, then I'll have a better point to bring to my landlady.

Get one of those little heaters that look like a radiator. They don't really blow air and take a while to warm up - but they work GREAT! I have one at work (our office was cold when we first moved in) and it's so small. Quite powerful though!

Do you know what the one you used was called? Name brand?

I found a Pelonis Fan Forced Heater (HB-211) at Home Depot for $13. So, that might work.

The one I have at work is similar to DeLonghi TRN0812T, if not that exact one. Second choice would be a ceramic heater. Last choice would be a fan heater. They are inexpensive for a reason. They blow warm air around and don't really heat much of the room. It all depends on what you're looking for. I currently have a fan heater in the bathroom (couldn't live without that one!) and one in the bedroom for when I need to get rid of the chill in the room. I heat my entire third floor with a tall oil filled radiator heater.

I second the radiator type heater. They are the best and run about 45 dollars at target or home depot. The fan ones tend to stop working or tip over a lot .

    dmontngrey,

Well, I definitely want to heat my room, not just blow air around. And really don't want anything that tips easily - the animals are in and out of my room a lot.

I could move my clothes hamper under my desk, and that might make enough room for the heater you mentioned.

I'll take a look at Target or Home Depot tomorrow (I know there's a HD on my way home, not sure about where a Target is located - will have to check.)

Thanks for the second debtfreeme. The ones I've seen so far are more in the $60 range, but I haven't checked HD or Target yet. $45 is a huge gulp - but probably worth it to help me have less chance of getting sick from constantly freezing in my room this winter!

Max is a CUTIE! I like the hat & scarf. I buy a new set at the end of the winter season for really cheap & now I have about 4-5 colors/styles of WARM and cute scarves, gloves & hats Smile Probably all bought for a total of $12.00!

    Thanks Househopeful!

This is really the first winter I've been in Texas where I've felt the need for much more than a light jacket and gloves. Probably due to walking the dogs - longer outside time! Big Grin

I THIRD the DeLonghi. They are available at Lowe's, I know, probably Home Depot and Menard's, too. It is a great, great heater.

    Cute kitty!

I'm surprised that she went along with it, and on her own? But that's good.

I probably should do the same as well. Darn house has a ton of windows, and I do enjoy the little light that comes through though....

    Thanks CB,

it looks like that is a good one Smile

    BA,

I wouldn't reccommend doing the plywood and cardboard routine. It does block out light (which is great at night) but I'm not sure how much cold air it's really keeping out. If I had had a chance, I wouldve put on the plastic first, then the other stuff. I'm trying to be grateful for her initiative and doing the positive thoughts that it is actually doing some good.

I'm getting a heater though, because when I hear the likely scenario of us getting into the 20's tonight ... I'd rather be warm than positive. Big Grin

I agree with the others - when I rented, my roommate thought electric heaters were cheaper (they weren't - not with 3 of them) and the house was FREEZING. I had a radiator type one and it worked really well. & I had a pretty large room actually. (Though careful with all heaters - they are such fire hazards).

Worked really well, but was quite an electricity hog, too. Just FYI.

    P.S. Kitty is cute!

    Thanks WowSmile

    MonkeyMama,

Hmm... Electricity hog? I'm hoping that the proverbial TX weather will kick back in soon, and we'll be back to lows of 50 instead of highs. So if that happens, I won't really have to use it much. Just when I'm still freezing with a t- shirt, sweatshirt AND my fleece jacket on ... need something to warm the room a bit. Smile

The main thing I worry about is the animals tipping it over. But if I turn it off when I'm gone, or close my door ... That should minimize the risk.
