Dry, dry, dry!

February 10th, 2009 at 03:42 am

I'm getting seriously frustrated with my skin - especially my face and scalp. I can't wear lipstick anymore because my lips almost *always* are chapped, so I'm constantly applying Blistex.

I only wash my hair every other day, because that is supposed to help it not be so dry. But my hair is always SO frizzy. And then my scalp - what does a dry scalp equal??

For that I've tried head and shoulders - but it doesn't do anything!

I rarely wear makeup - usually just mascara and at one time, lipstick. I wash my face with water and a warm washcloth at night.

I could say it's just winter time - but that's not all of it. I didn't used to have such a problem with dry skin - it started maybe 9 months ago.

Please, any advice?? Inexpensive ways to get my skin undry again??

Try an organic shampoo, something with natural oils. Try jojoba oil on your face. I also like Neutrogena hand cream for my dry hands...works on lips too!

    ccf,

An organic shampoo - like?? Would it be something I get at whole foods, etc?

One word for lips.... Carmex. It is what me and my 3 daughters all have used for years.

I also like Neutrogena intense stuff, what the name of it, I can't remember! Aveeno is good for daytime use though, Neutrogena before bed.

    whitestripe,

No, I haven't tried Vitamin E oil. I have hand cream with Vitamin E which works great for my hands, but thought it too greasy for my face.

Will have to think about that.

    homebody,

Oops, I think what I use actually is Carmex (although this last time I got some generic brand.)

Can Aveeno be used on the face? I sometimes have trouble with acne (along with dryness!) so am wary of putting things on my facial skin.

I just recently found out that peeling lips may indicate that you're allergic to something in your lipstick or lipbalm. I have to use plain Vaseline on my lips because most lipsticks and lipbalms make my lips tingle and also peel.

anonymouse - interesting. Can the allergy develop over time? Because Ive used basically the same brands of lipstick and chapstick/balm forever.

Does Vaseline do enough though? Keep your lips not chapped?

Try Burt's Bees on your lips. It's 100% natural. I use the lip shimmer instead of lipstick because it is so soothing and has a little bit of color. It costs ~$5 but worth it. I buy mine at Borders but I have seen it at many drug stores.

Oh, I forgot to mention that Burt's Bees also has a shampoo, and all products are sold at Whole Foods. Here is a link to read more about the ingreients in

Thanks Analise, I will have to check into Burt's Bees products. I think I've seen them at CVS before.

Here's some organic shampoo brands that come to mind: Jason, Avalon Organics...okay that's all that comes to mind. Yes, look at Whole Foods. Look for something with out lauryl sulfates, which are not good for our bodies.

Jojoba oil is actually something I use when I do get a breakout because it is close to our natural skin oils. It helps clear up acne, without drying. Try it and you will be amazed!! The bottle lasts a long time, too!

We use A&D Ointment - help on the worst of chapped lips, chapped hands, etc.

For your skin, nothing beats good old Vaseline. You have to really work it in so you won't be greasy, though.

For lotion I use Udderly Smooth udder cream. Can't miss the cow colored container! It's greaseless and odorless and yes, originally made for cows. You can find it with other lotions. I have an aversion to lotion and refuse to touch the stuff, but I'm ok with this stuff. I still don't like the lotiony feeling, but they aren't kidding when they say it's "useful as an aid for keeping skin soft and supple" You just can't use it on parts affected with cow pox...

For lips I swear by Carmex. Nothing else works for me - not even Burt's Bees. The more liquidy carmex in the squeeze tubes though, not the normal chapstick type.

I too vote to lose the blistex and buy Carmex.

On the skin, try taking borage oil or evening primrose oil tablets. Grease yourself up from the inside out. It's good for your hair too!

Can't help talking about it because Oprah's been on a tear about it - have you had your hormones checked recently? You may think you're too young, but no, ask your gyno to check your hormones and see if that could be playing some havoc with your skin.

On that TV show 'The Doctors', a lady doctor the other day was talking about the 'dry skin cycle'. You might try googling that phrase.

She emphasised several points - not bathing in such hot water during the winter, bathe or shower in warm water. 2)Bathe with a moisturizing soap, not a deodorant soap during the winter months. 3) Moisturize - she recommended one of the Eucarin (sp?) products in a gold bottle. And greasing up right after the bath. 4)Hydrating yourself w/plenty of drinking water. And probably some other things I've forgotten.

    Laura,
Burts Bee also carry a Bath and Body oil that has Vitamin E and other "stuff" in it. I like to add it to my bath water. It's oily to the skin without feeling greasy. Also, HEB, CVS and Target are carrying Burts Bee products now. Might be a little cheaper than Whole Foods. I don't know about your part of Texas but we've been lacking the humidity that is usually down here on the Gulf coast. I've been itchy too! We're so used to the wet air that the dry air does us in! Do you drink lots of water?

I am with the, how much water are you drinking group. I have roseacea and dry skin (and live in a dry climate) so I have big bottle of natural moisturizers at both home and work but how much water I drink has a huge impact on my skin and lip hydration. In the winter, I switch to a heavier conditioner and make sure to rub it in to my scalp as well as my hair.

    Wow! Thank you everyone.

I do have hypothyroidism, which can cause dry skin, but I take medicine for that (the hypo.) I would normally say that I drink lots of water 2 - 3 litres a day ++, but the last 6 or 7 weeks, I haven't been drinking as much.

I will definitely look into all the different things you all suggested.

    Thanks again!

i also have problem skin so i am wary of using anything greasy - i only use a neutrogena oil free scrub and sometimes proactiv but its a bit harsh for me - i also use clinique foundation and mineral powder, that is all i put on my skin. the vitamin e moisturising cream you can usually get in a tube from the chemist which is where i get it, its usually a generic chemist-brand.

You should exfoliate with a gentle home-made exfoliator. Don't just pile products onto your skin. make sure its clean and ready to recieve any any moisture you are introducing. Also I agree with drinking lots and lots of water.

    Home made scrub:
2/3 cup brown sugar (make sure its fine and not large crystals that will scratch your skin)
2/3 cup oatmeal (you can pulse it in a food processor to make it finer)
    1/4 cup coffee
4 teabags (the best dried tea leaves are more expensive but Teavana sells them)
1/3 cup oil (organic jojoba oil is the best)
put 2 vitamin E capsules in the jar to preserve the scrub.

Hopefully you are not allergic to any of the ingredients. You should test it on a small area on your hand first but the oatmeal and jojoba oil are calming for the skin.

Best time to use it in the shower, when skin is already moist and dead flaky skin is easier to some off. After using your skin is prepared for moisture. Use as needed but I currently only use it twice a week and I use this all over, even my lips and it works. I use to use store bought organic brands but the really good ones are very expensive.

Feel free to alter the amounts, I usually eyeball it when I make it.

Whitestripe: Thanks for the info re: vitamin E

TryingHard: That sounds interesting. I don't drink coffee - so would that be brewed coffee or unbrewed coffee? Does it matter what kind of tea you use? I think I have some teabags (green tea.)

  24. TryingHard Says:
    1234377951

I use camomile tea/green tea and it's dry instant coffee (I use Kava the others have acid in them). I mix all my dry ingridients and then add the oil.

  25. frugaltexan75 Says:

    TryingHard,

Thanks! I will have to see where I could get Kava - maybe someone who is a coffee drinker would be willing to share a 1/2 cup. Big Grin

Dry is better than oily. I can tell you that much.

For your hair, it looks curly like my daughter's. Check out www.naturallycurly.com - it is a site based on a book about how to take care of curly hair. It is MUCH different than other types of hair as I found out when I had my DD (my hair is straight and tends toward oily).

Since using some of the products and ideas from that site my DD's hair is looking much better - no more frizzies! Smile The biggest thing I changed is having her use conditioner only on her hair daily and really massage it into her scalp so it does not get itchy (we make sure to buy conditioners without "dimethicone" and other ingredients that end in -cone as they tend to build-up on your scalp and cause itchiness - the cheapest I have found is the Suave Naturals conditioner for under $1/bottle), and she shampoos her hair once a week after swim class.

    Gamecock,

Oh, but you see, I DO have oil spots, which is where I get my lovely acne. So I have the best of both worlds, dry and oily! Smile
    MariDH,

Thanks for the info! I'll check it out.
