More Extra Monies + a bit of a rant

October 18th, 2008 at 03:54 am

First, the good stuff. Big Grin

My second monthly ChaCha payment went through of $131.74. $10 of that was money from a contest I'd won. I lurve ChaCha!

I also picked up my check for the gym. It was for $65.50, but then the $20 overpayment from the previous check was subtracted, so it came to $45.50.

So, between ChaCha and the gym, in October I have added a little over $275 to my Extra Monies funds. Most of what I do for both of these require very little effort - just time and consistency.

It looks like my next paycheck for the gym will be at least in the low $100 range - due to an extra shift already worked, 3 Friday afternoons, plus starting to work the early morning shift on Friday Oct 31. Me likey.

------------

Rant.

Today I went out to eat with two of my coworkers. One of them had a buy one get one free coupon for specific items on the menu - none of which could be turned into a vegetarian friendly food. Not a problem - I'm used to it, and can deal with it.

I've eaten at this place a couple times before, and have found that the Grilled Cheese Panini w/ a side of sweet potatoes can be had for $6 +tax and is filling.

It is however on the children's menu.

So, I place my order for it. I am then told that I can't order off the children's menu. I reply back by saying that I have done it both times I've come before with no problems.

The waiter tells me that if I'd like to speak to the manager he'd be happy to get him. I very briefly considered this, but then decided that I did NOT want to make a scene. I told the waiter that I am a vegetarian and that there was NOTHING else on the menu without meat. He suggested that I get the quesedilla entree and just have the chicken left out.

The quesedilla price: $8.95
The pannini price: $5.95 (includes side dish)

I went ahead and ordered the quesedillas and asked to have spinach and mushrooms added.

Later when I saw the bill, they had charged me $9.95 for my item. I can only assume the extra dollar was for the oh so much more costly than chicken - mushrooms and spinach!

OY VEY!

Needless to say I will NOT willingly go there again - nor will I recommend it to anyone!

I would REALLY like to know just what the problem is with an adult ordering off the children's menu?? The portion size is going to be the same whether an 11 year old orders it, or an ahem.. 32 year old orders it. Is it really worth $4 to them to completely lose a customer??

Maybe you got a waiter in a bad mood. Or newly trained w/o discernment. My oldest daughter is a vegitarian and they always let her order off the kids menu... thank goodness. My kids all do! And I have to have a happy meal! Imagine if McDonalds would'nt let you order a kids meal.

    boo,
Maybe you are right. My dad suggested that I call and talk to the manager about the situation and see what he/she has to say.

There is no problem with an adult ordering from the child menu. Its an item, like any other item, that you can pick off the menu and they would serve it to you. Yes it is "smaller" but its not liquor, its not toxic, you're not allergic to it, its a lunch item ordered at lunchtime hours, and you are willing to pay for it at the price listed. For all the waiter knew, you could be ordering it for your child who happened to be in the restroom and therefore not visible.

I've ordered off the children's menu many times. When you start to re-train your eye for portion sizes, the first thing you notice is that the modern children's size is that they ain't that small.

oh girl I am right there with you. I get a grilled cheese sandwich whenever BB and I go to a steak joint. The people are nice about me ordering off the kids menu but often say they need to charge me 'as an adult??" it's an extra dollar or two. I think in this economy waiters are trying to make the bills as large as thery can to get a big tip- but your rant experience was not right. I would have talked to the manager when it was offered. Well I say that- but I might have done as you did and then silently fumed. However- you did spare the life of an animal, and the world thanks you for that.

The last time I went out to eat with someone, she tried to order off of the children's menu also and they would not let her. It is pretty common here.

I think that is crazy...the whole point of a childrens menu is less food so that it wouldn't go to waste. And if there is less food, it should be less money! I see no reason adults shouldn't be able to order off the kids menu...

Thanks everyone for your comments! By the waiter doing what he did, he actually LOST tip money. I paid for the whole lunch (my two coworkers gave me cash) with my point card. The total came to $25.83 and I paid an even $30. (I realized later that we should've paid tip on the total amount before the discount - oh well.) If I would've gotten the Panini like I wanted, I would have left the same amount of money - $30, which would have meant a much larger tip for the guy. I always tend to do that when a waiter complies with my special requests - give a generous (for me) tip.

Heck, I still order from the kids' menu sometimes - I just don't have a huge appetite and adult portions tend to be crazy.

I can't believe they wouldn't let you. That's just crazy - I would certainly talk to the manager.

When I worked full time the office would sometimes all order from 1 place and send a couple people to go get it. We would get around that rule by ordering it to go, they would let us have the kids to go with no fuss.
The reason it was a big deal in my office was because we had several who had the stomach reducing surgery. They would even split a childs dinner between them and still have leftovers.

Whenever my mom and I go out to eat somewhere, she always orders off the childrens menu because she had a gastric bypass done many years ago - otherwise she can usually split a meal with her husband. (They are both meat eaters.)

    MonkeyMama,
Yes, the so called 'normal' portion sizes are quite large. I usually ask for a doggy bag right away before even starting.

    Momfrom MS,
That was a good tactic your office came up with.
