Lawn Equipment?

May 1st, 2016 at 02:43 am

So DH was talking to me about a lawnmower tonight and a weed whacker. We also will need a snowblower eventually.

DH has a bad shoulder, and so needs an electric start mower, and also wants a self propelled one. He's been looking at Honda mowers - one that starts at $420. I have no clue about mowers ... Any ideas? Suggestions? He thinks the Honda one would have very good resale value if we ever were to let go of it. (I asked him about used ones - he said the used ones were almost as much as the new ones.)

Also looking at a weed whacker. What would you recommend for that?

What other tools are essential for lawn care?

What could be done without?

I seriously have no clue when it come to yard/lawn equipment .. other than rakes.

What about gardening tools? What is essential? Best?

Update on DSIL - Surgery went well. She was sleeping when we stopped by (with flowers and a card) but we spoke with her nurse. It most likely is a blood infection stemming from her dog biting her. (She was walking around in the dark and stepped on him.) They'll know more about the infection by tomorrow evening.

Yes, you need a mower and trimmer (weed wacker). If you do any of your own fertilizing you would need a spreader. If you will be trying to keep weeds away altogether, attaching a sprayer to your hose would be the best, rather than spot spraying. Notice I said hose, you will also need those, and sprinklers (unless you have in ground system in place). Water is really the best way to keep weeds away!

I'm sure Honda is a good mower. We've had a Toro mower for about 15 years. It is not electric start. In fact sometimes it take me a bit to get it started with my shorter arms! I never could get a gas trimmer to start, not enough strength. We bought me an electric trimmer which worked just as well. That one now needs a new battery.

DH doesn't think fertilizer or weed killer spray is good. Just spraying weeds with water kills them? Even in the garden?

Yes, many people avoid the pesticides and fertilizers. My DH worked in lawn care and these products work. I agree that they may not be safe for people or our environment. No water sprayed on a weed doesn't kill it. Sorry if I wasn't clear. Water keeps the grass growing which then suffocates the weeds. If your lawn is too dry you will find you will get more weeds.

Oh, ok. So that wouldn't work for the garden. Smile
