Snowy cold day

December 30th, 2014 at 12:59 am

I looked out my window at 7 and it was nice and clear - thought to myself - good! won't have to scrape my windows. Then at 7:40 I headed outside to find my car covered in snow!

It snowed pretty much all day today. The temp is supposed to go in the negative tonight/today. Brrr!!

---
Last night NE and I went to Walmart and did some shopping for the week. I spent $14 on two bags of cat food for Kari (using 2 coupons) and $7 on groceries.

After that we happened across another area of town that was beautifully decorated, so of course we meandered around there for a bit. Smile

---
I totally spaced on getting my eBay item out today. Will definitely have to do it tomorrow to keep within my two day turn around time. Oops.

I plan on taking workout clothes with me to work tomorrow and using the bus gym after work. I haven't been *quite* as exhausted lately, so maybe I'll actually be able to make myself do it.

---
I stopped at the library today - had a book to return and a book to pick up.

---
On FB today I saw someone in a YNAB group post say they managed to feed a family of 5 on $25/week!!! Um.... I can't even imagine. That's not even $1/day per person. I was feeling kind of good that I got my grocery spending (minus junk food) down to less than $150 for the month...

---
I'm thinking of letting go of my crockpot and rice cooker/steamer. I bought them two? years ago and they both are still in their boxes.. I keep meaning to USE them but it just doesn't happen.

Can you cook sweet potatoes in a toaster oven? If so, then I could let go of my toaster too and get a toaster oven. It seems really silly to get my oven going for just one potato - but I just don't feel comfortable cooking more than one at a time (botulisim or whatever it's called that can happen in baked potatoes in the fridge ...)

---
I'm wondering ... I'm getting emails about replies to my posts, but I'm not getting notices about responses to other people's posts. I've noticed a few posts with new responses by pure chance ...

My hands and feet are SOOO cold!!

You need some wool socks, and slippers! Drink tea to stay warm and snuggle under a blanket. We got snow here, but it was VERY light, and then it basically melted.

I'm cold, too! But I'll bet Nebraska is colder than here... it's supposed to be high 27/low 12 tomorrow. I just can't get warm! Going to fill up my hot water bottle and get in bed with a cup of tea...

By the way, I had the same idea about a toaster oven... I just ordered one; I'll post on how it is! I got a "scratch and dent" model for about 50% of the next lowest price I could find.

You most definitely can bake sweet potatoes in a toaster oven plus they are wonderful if you make and enjoy casseroles. I understand selling the rice cooker if you don't use rice as a basis for meals or make home made soup regularly over winter I finda crockpot such a versatile cooker but if it remains in the box, it's best to sell the appliances and use the proceeds for a toaster oven that might be more useful. I suggest reading Consumer's as some brands and features are more useful than others.

We'd enjoyed mild weather until snow late night 25th. Today negative 21 but wind chill took us to negative 30. There were 120 accidents on our hilly roadways today and a 20 minute trip to pick up someone at the airport took 1 hour, 20 minutes and looked more like fairground bumper cars but vehicles today just crumble

CCF - I'm COLD even wearing the super warm thermal socks NE got me and with a blanket over me and a heating pad on ... my hands mostly at that point though. I had fingerless gloves at some point - need to see if I can find them again.

I don't know for sure, but I think we got around 1 1/2 inches or more.

Buendia - Where did you find a scratch and dent model? I'd love to hear how you like yours and what model, etc. Our high was 21 and our low is supposed to be -2.

Snafu - I had a different crockpot before that I used fairly often, but then it was packed away for two years and got ruined .. I replaced it finally two years ago, but I guess I'd gotten so out of the habit of using one ... The rice cooker/steamer I really thought I'd use ... but again, never have. Space is at a premium in my kitchen, so if I got a toaster oven, I'd HAVE to get rid of a few other appliances. The only appliances I use daily/semi-daily are my blender, toaster and microwave.

Yowsa! Our weather doesn't quite match up to yours!

I've found that the folks who say they can feed a family of 5 on $25 a week are getting extra food from a source they aren't talking about. Like they may have a side of beef in the freezer, but they don't count that because they didn't buy that "this" week. Or they raise chickens for eggs, but don't take account of the costs of the chicken feed. Or they are getting food from the food bank or work or their family members. Or they are breastfeeding infant triplets so it is really just feeding 2 adults. Unless you garden so extensively that you have canned or frozen enough food for a year and have your own meat animals, I don't think anyone can truly do that. Not even with coupons.

NE was saying maybe the ate a lot of ramen noodles ... yuck! (so unhealthy!) I'm not sure how it could be done even with just two adults. I guess a lot of rice and beans, pbj sandwiches, not much in the way of fruit or veggies unless you have a garden...

There's a FB page here: feed your family for £20 a week. They buy a lot of reduced items then freeze them.

Yucko on the snow! It is 23 here, but at least it is sunny and no snow!

I also recommend the hot water bottle Buendia, in addition to wool socks, flannel pj's, etc. I usually sleep with one all winter!

Bluebird - Once I'm in bed I'm fine usually - it's just when I'm at my computer or even worse out in the kitchen (away from the space heater) I'm just too cold!
