Small flakes / Job Hunting Frustrations

March 13th, 2014 at 01:57 am

I cashed out my GymPact for the second time this month - $10 (total of $20 for March.)

--
3 items sold on eBay - total of $16.xx - net maybe 0.50 (after fees and shipping) At least I'm getting rid of the items.

---
Will cash out on bing tomorrow for another 500 SBs code.

I kind of feel like I'm hitting a brick wall when it comes to job hunting in a locale 1000+ miles away. I have found some opportunities which I've applied for, but most of what I've found are not ones that are going to be willing to wait til June.

I'm wondering if there is a point for me to go out there over Spring Break, since it'd still be 7 weeks out before I move there. Until I know what kind of job I have, I'm not sure if I should secure a place to live. I'd hate to put down a deposit and everything, and then find a job 30 minutes or more away!

What I'm thinking of doing is putting in my application at whatever local employment agencies there are in the city (with a June start date) and then once I'm out there I'll take whatever they find for me, and continue to job hunt. I have a paycheck through the end of June, as well as savings if I have to use them. That way I'll also have a chance to find a church home and then pick the brains of people there for job opportunities.

I'll need to put most of my stuff in storage until I find a place (and a job.) So that means renting a moving vehicle twice (at least the second time will be easier loading - no stairs to contend with!)

I have put in applications to two school districts (one in the city I actually want to go to, and one in a district 70 miles away - not ideal, but if it's where the jobs are...) I've also done tons of searches on various job sites - craigslist, indeed, hotjob, career builder, etc. I put in an application for a city clerk/typist job (actually pays more than what I get here!)

My brother suggested finding a recruiter or headhunter. I've done some searching trying to see if I come up with anything like that for the area. All I came up with were employment agencies that didn't have any offices in the state, let alone the city!

NE is on a long distance trip buying speakers right now (he was actually in NYC this a.m.! Thankfully nowhere near where the buildings collapsed.) When he gets back on Friday I really need to see if we can lay out some more firm ideas (see if I should go out there for Spring Break, or him come here, home hunting, etc.) May 25 is coming really, really quickly! (this is good, however it is also anxiety inducing not knowing what's going to happen)

---
I stayed home sick today (really nauseous, etc.) One thing I did (besides sleep!) was watch the Klondike (Discovery Channel) mini-series. I'd watched 3 of the episodes before, and today finished it. I was glad I decided to purchase the season - really enjoyed it. Smile

I still have my Person of Interest Season 2 to watch, and in a few days I think I'll be able to watch the newest episode of OUAT on Hulu for free.

Sorry to hear you didn't feel well today. Not fun!
Obviously, I'm many, many miles away from NE too, but we are going this next week to visit the University since my oldest daughter is interested in going there. There are several colleges in the area, so those may be places to look directly. I think there are quite a few insurance agencies/calling/claim centers. What kind of job are you interested in, I can ask some family members if they know of anything that would be available in June.

From our experience moving, it really is hard to know where you want to live right away. We have narrowed it down by school districts and relation to where my husband will be working, which we always know before we move. But that is usually the only thing we know!

    Wishing you well!

Any universities in the area you are looking at? They are usually a great place to work and lots of possibilities admin, professional or otherwise.

    Thanks CCF.

I'm looking for some kind of librarian position. Failing that - administrative assistant, clerical, receptionist, etc. I have 3 years experience as an admin asst (filing, copying, faxing, typing documents in Word/Excel, keeping insurance files for vendors up to date, Internet research, answering multi-line phone, etc.) I've been looking in the non-profit section as well to see what might be there. I did check out the Gallup website you mentioned, but there is only a managerial position which requires nights and weekends. (I can do any hours Sunday through Thursday - Friday til 5. No Saturdays.)

    Kiki -
Yes, there is. I have found a number of possibilities at one of the local universities. Several of which I have put an application in for.

You can also check federal job listings at US Jobs. Maybe something there? Fingers crossed one of the schools will call. There might be more options closer to summer.

Any word on the missing teacher?

Thanks LF - I haven't looked into that. Will do!

Nope - no word on missing teacher. Frown

I will put the word out. I know I mentioned the library position to my sister who works with LPS. She said those jobs don't open up too often. The district has pretty stable employment. I found this
Text is site and Link is www.schoolspring.com
site that has lot of school jobs listed. Not many media specialists near Lincoln though.

Thanks CCF. Yep, it sure doesn't seem like there are very many open positions in this particular district. Lots of openings in small town districts 50 - 80 miles away .. which actually kind of makes me wary (not to mention that I really don't want to move all the way to NE and STILL be a good distance away. Not really the point.)

School spring is a great site. Another one I like is teacher to teacher (that's where I found my current job.) Smile

Well let's think positive to find you something close. Malcolm, Waverly, Roca, Norris are all close districts to keep an eye on if you haven't already. Smile

Smile The district I found openings in was Blair - through School Spring. I put in an application. I'll check those other ones you mentioned. It would be nice if there was one application you could fill out and say "anything within a 90 mile radius of zipcode..." Smile

Fingers crossed something good will turn up soon!

Check out those universities for openings in their development/advancement offices. They really like to hire librarians for their prospect research positions. (It's what I do!) Look at aprahome.org for information on the profession. It was a good career move for me, as a former librarian.

    Thanks PNW!

Thanks CB! I will definitely check into that! I'd love to still use my degree for something, and I do enjoy research. Smile

Colleges there are UNL, Wesleyan and Union (Seventh Day Adventist). Southeast Community is the metro college.

NE went to Southeast, and I know quite a few people who attended/graduated from Union. Smile All the job ops I've seen so far are for UNL, although Union probably wouldn't advertise in general forums (they'd keep it to SDA circles generally, since the policy is to only hire SDA - part of what surprised me that a Catholic school would hire me. Smile )

Union does have a list on their website of openings. It was slim when I looked the other day though. Are you on LinkedIn? That might be a good place to put your resume. Maybe someone will find you and offer an interview.

    Yep, I'm on Linkedin. Smile
    That'd be nice! Smile
