Property Taxes!

December 6th, 2017 at 01:30 am

So I checked the website today to see if our taxes were posted yet. They were! We paid ~$2300 last year - but they upped our taxed value from $113 to $142 so I knew they'd be up a good bit.

I guestimated $3k and have been saving $250/mo towards that.

The new tax amount? $2760! That means we have a choice - move $240 to the CRV tax/registration category or something else; recalculate what we need to save monthly and absorb remainder into budget, or keep the extra as a buffer. I'd be fine with any option.

I was told today that we should have protested our assessment since it went up so much. I didn't even think about it due to thinking there was no point - it was the accessed value at the time of sale. If so, too late now.

I got another leaf bag done tonight. Tomorrow afternoon I have my dentist appt in the pm and probably will get home a little early. Hopefully I can get 2 or 3 bags done before I have to go help out with the costumes for our living nativity. (Sat night program.)

I am debating on the wisdom of getting a $25 AGC card. It's a free $3 (only 2200 SBs for first one) vs the $25 Paypal for 2500 SBs. I sometimes wonder if I spend the AGC $ more freely because I don't have to account for it in my budget. Whereas if it is cash, then I have to account for it.

Is it worth it to lose the "free" $3 to get only PayPal from SBs? In a year's time that's equal to 1 1/2 $25 giftcards ... But do I piddle away $36/yr of the "free" money?

So nice those property taxes came in under budget. Might be a good plan to keep saving the $300 going forward and then know you have a little buffer this time every year.

I usually get Amazon gift cards...we really do use them, and not just for fun stuff. But I have done a mix of the Amazon and the Paypal. Because I do like CASH!

Yes that made me quite happy. Smile

I usually get 1 AGC and then the rest PayPal. I just am seeing the money going down from other avenues and am not sure if AGC is the best way to go.

I only do Pine Cone, but I always get cash. My Discover cash back is now available as cash, too, so I opt for cash on that, too. I have found it is more difficult than expected to use gift cards effectively; I tend to waste them on stuff I don't need just to use them.

Smart move on your part to save as much as you did for the property taxes. Even if you didn't complain and see if they can be reassessed this year, can you do so next year?

I try to steer clear of gift cards for that specific reason...I feel like I have to use them and often don't use them as wisely as I would cash. We have a friend who puts everything on his Discover card so he can get his cash back in gift cards and thinks he is saving money. He is quite the spender and he is always justifying his purchases on how he saved money. Menards did a deal a couple of years ago if you bought something you got something free as far as tools and he went out and bought a bunch of stuff to get the free stuff. Does he even use these tools? Nope. He hires stuff out, but he claims he got a good deal since he got so much free.

CB - I don't know that I would say I waste them, more that I don't put as much thought into it as I might otherwise.

Rob - I don't think so - If they raise them again we can, but not retroactively.

That's what is worrying me too - not really using them wisely.
