More Dog meds, Restore Computer, test results, etc

June 18th, 2016 at 11:47 pm

Koky finished his medications two days ago. His itching seemed to be pretty much completely gone. By last night though, he seemed to be back to itching almost as miserably as before. Sigh.

So I called the vet this morning and got a refil of Aquapel - an itch inhibitor. $51. From what the vet tech said, it sounds like the only way he's going to not itch, is to take this - for the rest of his life.

I feel for his owner's - $100/month for meds to make their dog not itch. But it's a part of pet parenthood. You do what you have to do.

I completely wiped my computer today and then reinstalled most things. After 5+ years, there was a lot of miscellaneous stuff on it. I'm hoping that this will help make it keep going for a few more years.

--
Got the plumber bill finally (from the broken faucet/pipe) = $239 for two hours + parts. Not as bad as we were fearing.

I had bloodwork done last week - as part of our employee benefits. Part of it was a CBC panel. There were only 4 items out of range - two of which did not surprise me as they have been out of range before (Cholesterol.) The two other items though did surprise me - my platelet count was 508 (high range 400) and my lymphocyte count was also about 60 over high range. (can't remember what it was)

The least that it means is that I'm fighting some kind of infection - either bacterial or viral. Dr. Google also suggests other possible things ...

I'm going to try to get in touch with my doctor on Monday to see if she can look at the results and figure out if there is anything needing to be looked into.

Maybe this explains my complete lack of energy and moodiness ... Probably not the moodiness... Smile

I bought groceries for 3 cook smart meals on Friday. Yikes! It took me nearly 90 minutes to find everything. Just ingredients for three meals!

It also cost quite a bit more than I'm used to spending...

I need to figure out how to do healthy, home cooked meals, while also not killing the food budget. (Plus there's some produce from last week that didn't get used up - like half a head of lettuce, etc. Feels kind of wasteful.)

Maybe I'll just pick two meals and make 6-8 servings worth - so it'll use up the full veggie/fruit other ingredients, and also be less work. Smile

I'll get it figured out.

This afternoon I used some of the farro I cooked to make fried farro & veggies. It actually was pretty good. Smile

It's one way to use up the leftover veggies. Smile

We slowly developed a long list of favorites, through trying things out. We still do new meals once in a while, and if they're good they get added to the list. Weeks we know we'll be especially busy, we might focus more on convenience than healthy; during our CSA it's all about using up the veggies; etc.

One thing to do is to make theme nights; we don't do that formally but often I'll think "Italian/pasta, Mexican, Asian, comfort food, sandwich, salad/healthy meal, easy/fast" and kind of base my decisions on that to have a range of flavors and meal types. It also helps if you're like "I need half a head of lettuce for taco salad, so I'll also have a side salad with our sloppy joes."

It's been a few years (OK, nearly a decade) of steadily improving, but we've now gotten to the point where it's less effort to cook the meal we planned than to figure out where to get takeout/delivery, get everyone's orders, go get it/wait for delivery, etc. We used to say "oh, I'm tired, let's ignore the menu and get pizza" at least twice a month, but honestly I think we've gone off plan maybe three or four times in the past year or two.

Definitely check in with the doctor on the those numbers! I hope it turns out to be nothing!!

I hate to get test results and not know exactly what they mean. Definitely follow up, and whatever it is, tackle it head on! We want our FT to be healthy!

I think maybe you are stressing yourself out with the cooking -- especially when you have so much other stress to deal with right now. I've never found much merit in "plans" myself. You've already been cooking for yourself, and I understand that DH eats meat and you don't, but can't you just add a chicken breast or a burger to the meals you are used to making and let him have at it? Or if he wants to eat differently than you, he can prepare his own meals, which I assume he's used to doing?

CB makes a really good point on the meals. Smile

    In hope of being helpful..

Like ceejay, I can't imagine keeping 'all plates spinning' without a flexible menu plan. I hope you'll give your 'Cook Smart' a reasonable chance to become habit. It is particularly cost effective as experience has taught to begin with loss leaders + seasonal ingredients from flyers/on-line ads. The main line chains typically meet sale prices from competitors on request with a tiny bit of proof like a ph photo. Walking through the door knowing what to make and having all needed items at hand is a huge stress reducer. You might find it helpful to have a list of forgiving entrees that use up small amounts of stuff. Soup, stew, casserole...my family enjoys one dish meals like jambalya, pilaf, paella, Spanish rice which likely substitutes farro for example. I call it a plan-over and ban words like leftovers that has negative connotations.

As CB suggests, it's really simple to add a meat or fish portion for DH as preferred.

    Thanks everyone.

Part of the reason I'm doing the cook smart meals is to try to find some meals that both DH and I like which are also on the healthier side. (figure out our "favorites") While not resorting to freezer meals. My dinners I made for myself run the gamut of ... bowl of cereal ... pb sandwich, a baked sweet potato, something from the frozen section ... a box of junk food ... DH is used to making his own meals, but very rarely includes veggies in them. So ... I'm wanting to both get myself on a better plan of actually *making* food .. but also finding ways to get DH to eat veggies - must be in stuff / fixed in ways he'll actually eat.

So far, the zucchini cakes seem to be the best thing. I'm hoping he'll like the pizza this week (artichoke hearts, peppers, etc.) or the portobello mushroom things. Essentially, I'm trying to come up with a number of meals that we both enjoy - which incorporate lots of veggies, but could also eventually have some kind of meat added to it for DH. I want to get the meals down first, then start figuring out how to cook meats the way he'd enjoy them. (Hopefully he'll go for less meat in his portions if he enjoys the veggie portion enough.)

We both need to work on weight and cholesterol issues.

Snafu - great idea of having recipes that can use up leftover veggies.

Sorry about the test results. Hopefully your doctor can give you some ideas to bring the numbers in the best ranges.

Don't give up on fixing healthy meals. I'm sure you will find a new normal that works for both of you.
