Homeowners!

May 17th, 2016 at 02:52 am

The deed is accomplished. The papers are signed. DH and I are now $112k in debt. Gulp.

In a way it was kind of anti-climatic. I was super tired from work and had a sinus headache brewing. Then I missed the entrance to the building and had to drive around the entire mall to get back to it. I made it to the office with a minute to spare - but offended DH because I didn't call him when I got there so we could go up together. Sigh.

We got our keys and went over to our house to drink some sparkling juice and see the repair work. Both of us were kind of upset with the other, so no teasingly carry over threshhold stuff. {we got over it}

Our realtor came by with an oversized key and took our picture. How to let him know we kind of think he was a real let down of a realtor?

Is it normal to feel more scared than joyful after signing the papers? That's how I felt sitting in our garage and thinking about what it meant - that it wasn't just a dream anymore. That we now are 100% responsible for a house and a garage and a yard ...

Maybe it's just my sinus headache...

Congratulations, it will feel much better when you have your stuff in place and together are creating a home. You had a great deal of change to cope with in a short timeframe so it's bound to feel scary. Do your best to focus on wonderful tomorrows. Whatever you encounter as a homeowner, you can bet this passel of SA-ers have lots of solutions to suggest.

congrats to you! what exciting news! I think it is normal for all these changes in your life to be a bit scary esp when you care about money. A lot of people don't think of the "what ifs" and have a plan. When I got "divorced" a little over a year ago and I got the house in my name reality sorta set in that anything that goes wrong is on ME ... I don't get to call the landlord... it's just ME ... so that can put one in a bit of a panic. But the good outweighs the bad... and you are not alone and have a wonderful new life to look forward to. I so appreciate you telling about it :-)

Sounds like you are more focused on the negatives than the positives. I know that you didn't take on more than you can handle. You made a responsible decision. I personally would feel fantastic with only $112K loan. Our first one was around $85K and I long for those days. I think our next purchase will be more reasonable as we will be buying something smaller since no children will be living with us.

Remember that everything you want to do doesn't need to be done right away. Pay with cash as you go along and you will do just fine. Smile

Congrats!! It's normal to be scared. Oh, and the most fights I ever had with NT and AS was when we were newlyweds. I don't know why but suspect that's a normal reaction to that big psychological shift.

I think everything you are describing is normal. Even wonderful change is stressful, and the stress takes its toll. Once you settle in, get used to the new normal, you will be chuggin' along just like you used to.

Thank you everyone. I think I've a better perspective today. It's not like everything has to be done at once. Smile
I may take a picture of the berry thicket to see what y'all might suggest. It's really overgrown.

Congratulations...i ditto what everyone else said...yes, there's the responsibility of the loan, but there are a lot of positives, too.

$112K is a doable sized mortgage. Mine was just a few thousand less 20 years ago and I was able to pay it off as a single person in 17 years, so you two should be able to handle it easily. If you can prepay it when you can afford, please do, so you don't have to go 30 years with it hanging over your heads!

    Don't worry...you'll be fine!

Thanks Petunia - I took some pics today and am working on uploading them. Smile
Thanks PS - I found a calculator today and figured out what it would take to pay it off in 20 years. For the first 23 months, an extra $30/month. Then for the remainder of the loan an extra $130 (total) plus 2x a year an extra $220. The first two years we'll concentrate on medical and student loan debt and get rid of that.
