CA wildfires

September 14th, 2015 at 12:33 am

Hey all,

My brother lives in Napa and I have an uncle in Angwin. If I'm reading the maps, etc., right it sounds like my brother is in the mandatory evacuation area. I have had contact with him today, but not much.

The town of Middleton is pretty much completely destroyed - one of our churches and our local church school is reportedly amoungst the burned down structures in that area.

So scary how fast a majorly destructive fire can start. (This fire is only about 24 hours old.)

You can see a report on the fire and then pull up the map at the CALFire incident website. The map is outdated now, it reflects the fire as of this morning.

    http://cdfdata.fire.ca.gov/incidents/incidents_details_info?incident_id=1226

As of this afternoon, it had grown to 50,000 acres with zero percent containment. I'm in the South SF Bay area, 100 miles south of the fire, and there is a sprinkling of fine ash on the cars outside. The smoke has also arrived and the air quality has steadily been deteriorating this afternoon. The area north of Angwin in under mandatory evacuation. Angwin is probably 25 miles north of Napa.

Fingers crossed they can get a handle on this one soon.

    Thanks CCF

AR - Thanks, that was the map I was looking at. I too hope that it gets under control soon. Some of the reports I've been reading said that firefighters right now are just focusing on getting people out. The drought you guys have been having this year sure isn't helping things.

    So sorry to hear!

We have a relative who lost a home there. I don't know the details, but it happened so fast he didn't have time to rescue one thing from his house (the fire erupted while he was at work; his was one of the first homes lost in that fire last night). I don't know if he had pets. Frown

I know LookingForward is in that area too.

P.S. I should clarify that LF is in that general region; not necessarily being evacuated. I don't know or remember exactly where she lives.

So sorry to hear about your relative, too, MM. It has to be traumatic to lose everything! And thanks for the mention of LF, will keep her and all in the area in thoughts and prayers.

Oh wow MM. That would be so terrifying. To not even be able to go back to your home to get anything. Thanks for mentioning LF too - I didn't think about her being in that area. Hope she and her family are okay!

FrugalTexan I'm hoping for the best for your brother and uncle, I hope they'll be ok! And sorry to hear about your relative, that's an awful thing to happen

I pray for the safety of your family. I have an employee in CA, whose husband is a fire chief and is out fighting fires 3 weeks out of every month. It is a tough, tough job.

Thanks everyone. My brother is fine, and as far as I know my uncle is too.

    Anyone hear from LF?

I looked at the maps today and both LF and Napa are very far away from the fire. I presume LF is fine. The air quality must be terrible though.

As to my relative, he doesn't know anything. No one knows anything. They are indefinitely evacuated and it's possible his home did survive but who knows when he will ever know. I will update in my blog when we find out. (There's been some video of businesses and homes that look completely untouched, though rumor and word of mouth was different from the reality. BUT, the video also showed random flare ups and no one is there to put out the fires. It's not over).

P.S. The video was made by a rogue resident who snuck back in. If you are wondering why there is a video if no one is there. Even this guy admitted it was too unsafe and didn't stay long.

MM - That must be so difficult for your relative - the not knowing. I've seen one video of the devastation in Middleton - might be the same video you are talking about.

Thanks for taking a closer look at the map(s) - I wasn't totally sure where Napa fell in the Napa County, and I couldn't remember exactly where LF lived.

As of this morning there are non-mandatory (advisory) evacuations for Pope Valley and parts of Angwin. Your uncle in Angwin is probably looking at the fire maps and pictures and considering his options. Napa is not in any current danger.
