Now Baby ... Poor NE

May 14th, 2015 at 02:58 am

So just as Riddles seems to maybe be coming out of the health woods, down to two visits a week for fluids, more bad news.

NE came out of his room tonight to give Riddles his potassium pill. As he walked out the door, he saw Baby, his second oldest cat, laying on the floor stretched out (on stomach) twitching and shaking and eyes all glazed. He ran through what might have happened and the only thing he could come up with is the flea meds he'd given the cats that morning when he got home from work.

None of the other cats seemed to be having any reaction.

On his way to the emergency vet he called me - I threw some clothes on (was in my comfies already) and rushed over. The vet agreed that it was the flea meds - it was some he'd gotten off of eBay that apparentally had a pesticide in it meant for the fleas, but that Baby somehow had gotten internally - which is what was causing the tremors/paralysis.

Baby is staying overnight at the emergency vet - they gave him two baths to get rid of the toxins and will be giving him fluids, etc overnight. $527 if all goes well.

NE was saying to me while we waited for the bloodwork to come back he told me that he is definitely not getting any more cats until he's down to one or two again (considering that the youngest is 4, that could be awhile.)

NE just called me ...
00 He stopped at home before going to work and rechecked his other cats - Munchkin, his favorite, seems to be having a slight reaction. He gave her a bath twice and then headed to work...

Question - do all vets/vet techs automatically call cats "her" or "she"? Both Riddles and Baby are male, yet they both keep getting referred to as females?? I never noticed that with Monkey (male cat) and with Kari (female) I wouldn't notice it.

Oh no! Do you know what flea med it was?

It's funny you mention the she thing. We took our cat to the vet yesterday and they referred to him as a she. I just thought they hadn't looked at his chart very carefully or whatever and there wasn't really a pause to correct them so I just shrugged it off. (My last cat was a she and this is only the second time I've taken him to the vet).

No, I'm not sure what the name of it is - but it's one meant for dogs ... which supposedly someone on the 'net said was ok for cats as long as you used a smaller dosage ...

That is funny you had the same "she" experience! I told NE that maybe vets called all cats "she" just so they didn't have to remember whether the cat was male or female (unless spaying / neutering)

yikes--that's horrible for the cat, for NE, and for the budget.

I guess it makes sense when you think about it. Because cats clean themselves, anything put on their fur could be ingested. I hope they all get better soon!

Sorry to hear it! I hope all the cats are feeling better soon

I actually think of all cats as females and all dogs as males. Interestingly enough, people always assume DD1 is a female dog (probably because I am a tiny female...).

Well, I have two female cats, so I wouldn't notice. I sometimes accidentally refer to my sister's dog, named Amy, as a kitty! I'm just so used to cats.

I sure hope all of NE's cats are okay. I know the instructions for the cat flea meds I used said to put it on the back of their head/neck. A friend told me her vet gave her dog a pill for flea and tick prevention...not sure if that is an option for cats.

I think people in general call all cats "she" and all dogs "he." But weird that a vet would do it.

Sorry about the bad reaction -- hope everything turns out all right!

Thanks all. It does seem like the cats are both doing better tonight.

CCF - I don't know if there is a pill for cats, it seems like that would be difficult to get into them (unless you could crush it up and mix it in with canned food .... only way I can get Kari to take a pill)
