Local Honey

March 6th, 2015 at 01:16 am

Today I was absolutely miserable at work - sneezing, coughing, blowing my nose. At least I got more sleep last night than I did on Tuesday night - mostly thanks to taking some Dayquil (the Nyquil works, but I don't like taking it on work nights - too groggy.)

I ordered a bottle of oregano oil capsules - something I've used before which seemed to really help. Then after work today I stopped by OH, a local whole foods/trader Joe's type place and bought 8oz of local honey. I already had a piece of PBH toast. Yum. Smile (I'm not counting the honey as a junkfood purchase - I'm counting it as a medicinal purchase. Believe me I was tempted by some yummy looking fudge ... but I persisted and resisted!)

I got my first paycheck with my raise / retirement deduction / new w-4 deduction. It was about $7 less than normal. So it seems that changing from 2 to 3 on the W-4 was the right thing to do. Smile

I'm curious ... I know that you can start withdrawing from a 401k when you turn 55 penalty free - but what I have at the bus company is a 401b. On my paystub it lists the deduction as "pension." I know I have 15 1/2 years before really needing to worry too much about this .. but it's something I haven't been able to find too much about online.

Also I'm wondering if I'll still be able to claim the tax savers credit since I now have a workplace retirement plan?

15 days down of 40! Surprisingly it really hasn't been all that hard. Really the better word would be MIND BLOWINGLY.

Thanks CCF! I just wasn't sure, because I thought I had read somewhere that you couldn't take it if you had a workplace retirement plan.

Pure raw honey isn't junk food at all. It is full of health benefits. It helps with allergies and sinus problems and applied directly on a wound can speed healing.

LR - Thanks for mentioning it. I had heard it somewhere else before, but for some reason the idea never took hold. I don't know if it's psychological or not, but I seem to be feeling somewhat better already! That's cool about the wound healing!

It wasn't until I started having a teaspoon of honey each day that I beat that awful cold/flu/cold thing I had from October through January. I started feeling better the night I started it. Now my kids are sick and I'm not and the only thing I am doing differently is eating honey and having some in my tea at dinner.

You know I once got stuck into some local honey.
Everyone warned me that you it was better.
    I was hooked.
I didn't know how I lived before that.
Now we are married with two kids and she is still just as sweet as the day I met her.
I would never tell her this though. It would tip the fragile balance of her pursuing and wooing me Stick Out Tongue

$7 less than normal isn't bad. I didn't know that about honey. How is NE after his surgery?

LR - Your kids don't like honey? I hope it does a miracle like that for me too, because I'm SO over feeling miserable.

SG - Nope, not too bad at all. Smile NE hasn't had his surgery yet - it'll be on Wednesday.

You can only take 401(k) withdrawals at 55 if you separate from service in or after the year you turn 55. Otherwise it's 59 1/2 like other retirement accounts, but only if you're separated from service.

I've not heard of a 401(b) plan, is it maybe a 401(a)? Those plans are like a pension; you cannot access it (even to roll it over to an IRA) until you are at least 55 years old and separated from service.

Doingitallwrong - Yes, I think it is a pension. My goal is to retire by 55. 😀

If unfiltered, unpasteurized honey attenuates hayfever, then my DH needs honey from Texas, Oklahoma, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo Leon, and Tamaulipas! Every time the weather comes in from the Southwest, he gets hayfever. Their pollens are probably the cause.

Joan - I didn't have allergies until my family moved to Albuquerque when I was in elementary school ... I had the back dot test and tested allergic to just about everything environment related (dust, pollen, trees, grass, tumbleweeds .....) I don't get hayfever as badly as my dad did though, although it does seem to be getting worse.

Tabs - Thanks! I didn't sneeze at all yesterday at work, although I ran through a lot of tissues. Last night I started a deep cough. I'm afraid this might be turning into bronchitis .. so am staying home from church today to just rest.

They do like it, Laura, they just don't do it when I tell them to. Kids.

  17. FrugalTexan75 Says:

Yep, that's kids for you all right. Smile Maybe tell them that the honey isn't to be touched by them ... then they'll want it. Smile

Yes, Honey really does help. Smile
Is the honey really *local* to your area? Often in a chain store it might say local, but that "local" is in another state. Wink

LR - The honey I bought was made on a farm about 30 miles from here. About as local as we can get I think. Smile

I've never heard this about local honey before. My DD's allergies are terrible. I'm going to try it when we get home. Thanks!

I too can't live without local honey. My allergies are better and the taste is amazing. I can't even think about eating that other junk lol.
