Saturday (can't think of a title ... :)

January 3rd, 2015 at 11:47 pm

Today makes 3 days of January with no spending (other than bills.) Tomorrow will not be a no spending day. Smile NE and I will be doing a Sam's and Walmart run.

Between the two stores I am going to try to keep my list to ten items (or perhaps less.)

---
I decided to stop at my landlord's after church today to drop off my rent check rather than try to include it on my library walk. It would have been on the way - but the library is on one side of a busy road and their house is on the other side. It would have been a hassle.

It was funny because when I got there someone else had just come from their porch dropping off their rent check - must be from a different property though because I didn't recognize her.

---
When I got home I had a nice warm meal of toaster grilled cheese, tomato soup and a small piece of banana bread (bought a few weeks ago on sale - two loaves - put one in the freezer which is the one I'm eating now.)

Finally about 2 p.m. I worked my courage up to get bundled up and walk to the library. Last week I finally managed to remember to sync my iTunes music library onto my new phone - so I had music to listen to!

The walk was pretty chilly - at 5:30 it's 23 degrees, so I guess it was around 20 or so when I went out. We're supposed to get more snow tonight. (Low of 0degrees)

On my way back home I had a lady ask me about the bus schedule. LOL Even away from work I can't get away from work. Big Grin I gave her an estimate of when the bus should be coming by (the outbound one had passed me ten minutes earlier, otherwise I'd have no idea other than the bus come once an hour on Saturday.)

---
I've got a sweet potato in the oven right now while sipping on some hot chocolate ... yummy Smile

I'm probably going to watch a couple episodes of POI tonight - one of the things I got from the library is Season 3 of POI - that way I can post my copy on eBay and if it sells then at least I can finish watching it! Smile I want to get it on there (eBay) before everyone who's interested has already seen it.

I also do want to watch Labor Day - NE actually watched it on his own last week! Now he's anxious for me to see it so we can discuss it.

---
The scale seems to be going down right now. Who knows if it will continue or not. Hope springs eternal and all that ... Smile I'll do an "official" weight loss post on Thursdays - since I made my first weigh in on a Thursday. Smile However I do weigh myself just about every day and record it on an app - mainly for the ten points it gets me on Achivemint (which I'm less than 900 points away from a $100 Visa card!!)

---
I'm so glad to be getting notifications of responses to other posts now! I was able to find a few people responses to comments I'd made, but couldn't remember which post it was on.

Now if the photo issue could be fixed ... Big Grin

---
OH I almost forgot a question I was going to ask.

Are there alternative methods to wrapping a potato in aluminum foil for baking in the oven? I'm going through a lot of foil, even when I manage to reuse a piece.

You don't have to wrap them in foil. I never do. Smile

Really?!! I thought wrapping them in foil made it so they don't dry out??

I like the flavor of the skin when it's roasted.
Yeah, the skin gets dried out, but the inside is fine.
Give it a try and see what you think.

You could try coating the skin with a little olive oil to keep it moist?

Thanks LF - I will definitely be trying this!

Microwave in a paper towel is how my youngest daughter was taught in Family Living.

CCF - I have a microwave bag for potatoes ... just really, really, really prefer oven baked ones. I don't think a paper towel would work in the oven. Big Grin

No don't use a paper towel in the oven!! I'm going to do baked potatoes tomorrow night. I think I'll try without foil and see how we like them compared to the microwave. Smile

No worries - no paper towel use in the oven here. Big Grin
I'll be interested to hear what your family thinks. I probably won't be doing another baked potato until Monday, so won't experiment foil free til then. Smile

Alton Brown and the TV cooking gurus all suggest moving the stove rack to centre, poke potatoes with a fork, rub in a teeny bit of olive oil and roll in coarse salt. bake 1 hr @ 350F

We were taught that foil wrap was used to steam potatoes so it comes down to the result you want. Would it help to bake in a Dollar store, foil pan like those used to bake/freeze/store foods? It would be re-usable.

    Snafu - Hmm...

The salt is a no go for me for two reasons - 1. I don't like salty potatoes (really salty anything) and 2. salt and sweet potatoes don't sound like they'd go together. (I once got a baked potato at Outback and nearly choked .. it was SO salty. The broccoli I ordered was over salted too though .. so I think they just are way over generous with the salt.)

The foil pan is an interesting idea. How would it be covered? A piece of foil or something?

I bake them uncovered just like Looking Forward. Make a couple of slits. Put on a cooky sheet or other pan so it doesn't drip on your oven. Bake. Enjoy!

Carol - Sweet! I always make slices in my potatoes after scrubbing them - so maybe do the same, add a little olive oil and bake on a cookie sheet! And my box of foil will last another two years rather than running out in two weeks ... Smile

I made a baked potato for dinner last night. I wash it well (I like to eat the skins), poke holes in it, microwave it for about 4 minutes then toss it in the toaster oven at 400 for 30-40 minutes. Microwave shortens baking time when in a hurry.

    Love them for dinner.

    Hi Kiki,

I like to eat the skin too. Smile Sounds like you've got a good cooking method.

Just wanted to also cast a vote for baking them without foil -- just prick with a fork and rub lightly with olive oil. Yum! At least when I'm not too lazy and end up just making them in the microwave.

I'll be impressed if you can keep your shopping to a total of 10 things across both stores. I don't think there's any way I would do that!

I'm not a big fan of baked potatoes, but why not try cutting them in chunk/wedges, coating with olive oil, rosemary and salt and pepper, and doing them that way? They're delicious.

Funny, you're the 2nd person here who was talking about watching Labor Day. I just watched it myself on Netflix, though I'd never heard of it before. I thought the guy who played the con was very hunky. Smile

Your meal sounds lovely, and now I want to make banana bread.
When I make baked potatoes I sometimes cheat and put them on a microwave container that I got for £1 in Asda (Walmart) for five mins then put them in the oven. I don't always use foil.

Chole - If I stick to my list, I'll be able to keep it to ten items. Smile
PS - I've done something similar to that - only with olive oil and oregano. Not a fan of pepper (or salt much either) - baked the wedges in foil. Smile
I haven't watched it yet ... got suckered down the rabbit hole of YNAB forum journals til I couldn't keep my eyes open

SG - That sounds like a good way to do it - faster and still get the oven baked taste. Smile

I saw Labor Day at the theater and enjoyed it very much, more than I expected to.

I agree with the others -- you don't need foil! In fact my FIL hated them that way, because they were essentially steamed, not baked. I prick with a fork and coat in oil (lightly).

did you get a toaster oven? i love baking potatoes in mine because they cook fairly fast and the skin gets crusty, crisp and delicious. no foil needed! sweet potatoes do drip though, so you'll need something to catch the liquid.

CB - I've seen half it now, and though it isn't quite what I thought it would be, I am liking it.

Starfishy = Nope, I haven't gotten the toaster oven yet. I'm checking around for prices, etc to see what I really want.
