Why I Don't Walk Alone in My Neighborhood

June 13th, 2013 at 02:34 am

Tonight it was finally cool enough to consider going for a walk again with my walking partner. As I was heading over to where we meet, a short black boxer type dog runs across the street from where it lives and bumps against the back of my knees. That was startling enough, but I also felt a sharp stab as he did this. I immediately stopped and looked, and saw that he'd broken my skin.

I then just kept on walking ignoring the dog. It was following me, and the child of the owner kept calling him back (which he ignored.) Finally I got to my walking partner, and the other dog left. (probably after getting a whiff of my walking partners bull mastiff!)

This is a not great picture of it. In the grand scheme of things, not that big of a deal/bite. It's more the principle of it that really irks me. (Not to mention that if the dog had *really* wanted to be aggressive/attack, I'd probably be in the hospital now with major leg wounds at the least.)

One bit of great news -- the maintenance guys came by today and hooked up my swamp cooler! Yes!! I'm glad I didn't go spend money on an a/c unit.

Cancer s*cks. I found out today that one of my friends from Pathways (a life improvement program I went through in 2006) has stage 2 breast cancer. She's the mom of two young kids. Frown

Do you live in an area where no children play outside either, or where dog owners aren't required to leash their dogs? I ask because if I'd been bitten I'd have taken the dog's address and told the owner and/or the police. My brother was eleven when he lost a bit of lip to a dog as he was walking. Dogs that run to and nip at people innocently walking by are menaces, unless the people are walking on the dog's property being not so innocent, then the dog is in the right.

Ouch! Quite the surprise I'm sure.

Dog bites can be very serious, even fatal if the dog has been exposed to rabies. Many if not most jurisdictions require bite reports and the dog is impounded for observation if there is no proof of current vaccination. From what I have read on your blog, you live in a fairly small town/rural part of New Mexico. It is likely the rabies virus is present in wildlife in your area. In your shoes, I would report the bite to the local animal control agency ASAP.

I would report it, too and make sure by asking the owner for the dogs vet report and proof of rabies vaccination. Very important!

Take care of yourself! I hope it doesn't happen again!

All dog bites should be reported to animal control. Today it was a small one, but tomorrow it could be a big one and it could happen to a child, even the owner's child. It was unprovoked. You really shouldn't let this go.

Tomorrow after work I'll see if I can get in touch with local animal control, and also figure out for sure which house the dog came from. I have a general idea, but am not 100% positive. I hadn't even thought of the rabies angle ... ick. Of course reporting to animal control here ... well, let's just say it doesn't do much good. A man who was volunteering here for a few months got bit much worse than I did - where it was actually bleeding. He reported it, and pretty much nothing was done.

Here, it was a horrendous, blood chilling death of a child that made my city take note and change its ways with regard to animal control. I just cannot even type the words as to what happened, but I will forever see loose dogs as a matter to be taken seriously.

I agree with the others; i would report it to both the owners and police, if for no other reason than if there's another dog bite incident down the road, there's a record of a pattern here. That kind of thing should be nipped quickly in the bud or the owners will have continuing and more serious problems down the road.

I suggest you get a can of pepper spray or stronger stuff - "bear repellant" and carry it with you. You should be able to find either on the net or a camping supply store.
Then don't feel bad when you have to spray a dog that gets to close. Smile

Thank you all. I tried to figure out which house the dog came from this afternoon, but am just not sure. I also tried to contact animal control, and there was no answer. Will keep on trying though.

I do have a can of mace that my dad gave me several years ago. I need to find it (and open the package!) LF -- the part of not feeling bad if I had to spray a dog... you know me pretty well don't you. Smile
