Extra monies, Practice Test, Disapointing Letter,

January 11th, 2011 at 02:19 am

This will be much shorter that it was - submitted the orginal post and was told *you are already registered as frugaltexan75* --- so post was gone. Ugrh!

Received $20 in Amazon gift cards today from Swagbucks for January. Waiting on the 5th card.

Only 7 points away from my first Amazon card on irazoo!

---

Took the practice test for librarian certification today for the third time. 1 - 79; 2 - 81; 3 - 81. 80 is passing. The real thing is on the 29ths. So, I need to hit those flashcards hard!

Letter from my bank today telling me that they're going to start charging $8.95/month for checking starting in February. Two main ways to avoid it is direct deposit of $300/mo or maintain a balance of $1500. Can't do #1, so am considering #2 just so I don't have to go through the hassle of switching banks. However, at some point in the next four or five months I would not have that much to maintain - so would get the charge anyway.

Will have to think some more on this.

It may be worth switching. Banks count on you to stay. If more people leave, they'll stop charging it.

True. It's just such a hassle to switch. I have a book of deposit slips with the account number and address for this bank - and its located in a convenient place ... Who's to say the one I switch to doesn't switch to fees within a short while. I had just inquired at my bank in October about this very scenario. UGH!

Is it B of A? You can do MyAccess checking for free (if you open online), but of course you will have a new account number, so will still have to change any autopay items.

It's a pain, I know. My philosophy is: I will keep my $8.95, thank you.

I'd look into a credit union.

I've never been charged any banking type fees and have only changed CUs once (changed only because I moved - and changing CUs wasn't 100% necessary just because I moved).

    Petunia,
    No, it's Compass.

    MonkeyMama,

That is something I should look into. I meant to do that before, when Chase started charging fees, but can't remember why I didn't. Although off hand, I can't think of any credit unions that I pass by on any of my routes.

I used to be a librarian, but never had to take any kind of certification test. Is it for school librarianship?

    CB,
Yes, it is for being a school librarian.

Check to see what they consider a direct deposit. Some consider any regularly recurring, automatic deposit to count. If that's the case, if you have an account an ING or a place like that, you can set up an automatic transfer each month, then transfer it back. Pain in the neck for sure, but it'll save you the $8.95.

Unfortunately, free checking is soon to be a rarity. It costs banks money to maintain checking and savings accounts. They do not make money on free checking. They made up the income through credit cards, which they market to their customers. Now that the credit card laws have changed, they will be looking to recoup any losses from checking accounts by fees.
