Ack! Just When I Thought the Backyard was Safe!

November 25th, 2010 at 05:17 am

Both of my blogs are updated - Living Frugal and Children's Books.

I've been keeping busy the past few days doing just about anything but schoolwork .... but I did finally put a half-hearted attempt at the TWO assignments due this week.

Tonight I had the two new boys who I started working with last week. I was way over prepared. Smile

Tomorrow is the end of the challenge between my mom and I. Up until Monday I was doing pretty well with it. Today I was back on track though. My mom ... I think I still beat her. Big Grin

Okay, for those of you who don't like snake stories or pictures of snakes, now would be a good time to do a swift scroll to the comments section (if you want to leave a comment, of course!)

----

Okay .... I warned you!

This afternoon I took Buddy out in the backyard for his pit stop. I had barely put him down, when in the corner of my eye I spotted something moving. When I looked fully at what had moved ... not 3 seconds passed before I had screamed, picked Buddy up, and ran inside the house yelling for my stepdad. What did I see? Well ... here's a picture of what I saw *after* SD (SuperD...!) had finished with it.

I am not sure what kind it was. I really hope it wasn't a pet snake or something. SD had to chop at it with the shovel multiple times - it's exoskeleton was very hard. Even after all that, it wasn't still fully dead.

No more letting Buddy out in the yard without a leash! (We've been letting him slowly have a little bit more freedom, as he's earned it.)

Anyone have any idea what kind it is? It was over 3 feet long.

wow, no idea what it is. scary! it is snake season here right now, so I am super worried about jed and banjo, as JR's are the type to hunt snakes.
here you're not allowed to kill a lot of snakes, most of them are protected species. though once we had a king brown snake on our front step, about to slither into the house (majorly deadly snakes!) and my stepdad ran out of the bathroom in a towel and chopped at it with a shovel too. you gotta do what you gotta do to protect your family!

I have never killed a snake. The only poisonous ones in my area are rattlers, copperheads, and water moccasins. The vast majority here are harmless. I have not seen a living snake here in the city in years, but I was really happy to see a shed skin on my neighbor's walkway one day. I _want_ snakes around here. They are part of a healthy ecosystem. Some will help keep in balance things like mice, rats, moles, and voles. I only think snakes may be killed if they are poisonous and living very close to us, i.e., a threat. You know about the general viper shaped head, don't you?

I actually like snakes. We never kill them.

    Eeeeew.

Actually, I don't mind non-poisonous snakes, but hear they are around (just never seen one?). What I wouldn't want is ANY snake inside my house. Nor near my kids or pets (because you don't know if it's harmless or not).

I also just found out that tarantulas are local, too. O.M.G. Not very dangerous I suppose - but I have severe arachnophobia! My friend found one inside her house. Ack!!!! Thankfully, our house seems pretty airtight when it comes to big spiders, and snakes!

I don't know whether or not we are "allowed" to kill snakes here or not ...

I didn't know what to do ... my stepdads reaction was to kill it ... so I went with that.

I'll add a picture SD took of its head. I'm still not sure what it was.

I'm generally okay with snakes and such, this one was just SO big, and really scared me being in my backyard like that with my little 5 lb puppy. If I'd seen it behind plexiglass at a zoo or such ... fun to look at. Up close and personal, not so fun to look at.

Wow...and I'm the one that lives in the tropics! I[ve heard stories here of people finding snakes in their houses... mostly in new neighborhoods... ours is old, and the whole place is so urbanize (?) by now that it's a miracle we see birds! (thankfully), although we used to get the occasional rat or possum (not since we have cats, they flee at the mere smell of the cat!)

DH says that is not a viper head and is definitely not a coral snake (the only poisonous snake in in the US without a viper type head).

My sister lived where there were both rattle snakes, alligators, and tusked wild boars. She got a shotgun for Christmas her first year there. She had to take it out with her to hang the laundry to dry. Once her cat saved her from a rattler!

Thanks Joan. Could it be some kind of a rat snake?

That was one of the types DH said it might be, but I forgot what he said was another possibility. (He was a snake hobbyist as a teen. Weird, eh?)

Not really weird for a teenage boy. Big Grin
