Found a fun site :)

November 10th, 2010 at 04:03 am

I am signed up with a couple of listserves serving librarians. This past week or so, a number of posts have had links to videos made by this one site. My professor in one of my classes this semester has also created several of her lectures using it. So tonight I was feeling a little bored (even though I have plenty of schoolwork I should be doing!) and decided to play around with it. Big Grin

I posted the end result on my living frugal blog. Here is the link

Text is Cooking Lentils and Link is http://www.livingfrugalandsimple.com/2010/11/cooking-lentils.html

Today was a NSD.

I worked with Korean Boy this afternoon. A week or so ago he'd made a 31 slide PowerPoint on WWII without my help. Today I was helping him write notes for presenting it to his class on Friday. Oh boy. He essentially went to a Korean Wikipedia site and copied the translated information, and pasted it into the slides. A few of them make sense, but most make very little sense at all. He's already turned the slideshow in, so there wasn't anything I could do about that. But I did help him at least make his notes for the presentation sound halfway decent.

So what did cracker tutor tell said Korean boy about plagiarism?

I don't know what you are trying to imply by the use of that crass term, but I will answer your question about plagiarism. He and I have had this discussion before -- many times. Yesterday I again tried to tell him. He insisted that all his teacher cared about was if the questions were answered. He's 19 (in Korean years) and thinks he knows it all. He'd already turned it in, so there wasn't much that I could do. I very much want him to do well, and I push him very hard -- and he is doing much much better this year. He seems to actually care about doing well. I think he gets overwhelmed by some of the assignments, and sees what he did as an expedient way to complete his work.

In the future, if you have a question you'd like answered, please just ask the question. Insults are not necessary.

Ok, legit question here: why do you specify that he is 19 "in Korean years"? Is a year not a year? Confused!

Good question. Smile The way it was explained to me is that in Korea the day a child is born, they are considered to be one year old. I've asked a both of my Korean students if this is true, and they both confirmed it. The host mom of high- school and college Korean boys is who told me. It took me a bit to wrap my head around it. Smile

Why would you say Korean boy all the time like you are referring to an alien?
I.e. If you were tutoring an African American would you say black boy this black boy that?
    Sounds weird, IMO.

Ok, you do have a point. I actually have thought about another way to refer to my students without using names. Thank you for bringing this to my attention.

Huh, that is different from what we're used to! I can see how it was difficult to wrap your head around it. Never heard of any such thing myself. Interesting.
