Nice surprise :)

May 3rd, 2009 at 09:21 pm

Last night I talked to my dad for awhile. He told me I really should check my mail. Unfortunately, it was raining cats and dogs with a good bit of lightning thrown in for good measure. So, I didn't get to the mailbox till this morning.

In the mail was a letter from my dad, and an envelope from my grandma. In the letter from my dad was a check for $100 -- for FUN not Savings -- was clearly specified on it. Heh, he knows me so well. Smile It was totally unexpected and so sweet of him. Big Grin

In the envelope from my grandma was a dvd of Les Meserables (the one with Liam Neeson.) Nice! She and I saw the traveling broadway production of it in San Antonio in 1996??

I spent a good portion of my evening yesterday trying to figure out how to get comment luv off my other blog. Comment luv is this add on that is supposed to make it so that when a person leaves a comment along with the url to their own blog, then a link to their latest post shows up. Well, not only have I not been able to get it to function like that, I also can't figure out what feed the comments are on --- this is a problem because my recent comments widget and my top posts/most popular posts widget can't work either!

Never did figure out how to get it off, but did end up switching to a totally new template/design. I also made my own header for it. Not completely sure I like it just yet. I may need to do a bit more tweaking of the header.

I posted about my

Mandie and the Secret Tunnel. A great children's mystery book (Christian fiction.)

I feel bad for E, the gym manager. Three weeks ago his grandfather died. Then on Friday his grandmother died. He asked me to call all the gym workers and let them know that the paychecks wouldn't be ready until Wednesday. One person I called and told this to was so callous - saying 'it's always something.'

While that may be true, the poor guy has lost both of his grandparents in less than a months time!

This same person told me that he refuses to do anything other than sit and watch the gym, do towels, etc. If E wanted him to make phone calls to people regarding invoices due, or call other gym workers on various issues, or update the waiver file, he'd have to pay him extra.

Me on the other hand, sees how much E has to do and how overloaded he is. I see how much free time I have while at the gym, and for two reasons: 1. To help E out; and 2. Hope to help E be more ...errr.. organized -- have volunteered to do anything I can to help lighten his load. (which he has taken me up on -- and I still have plenty of time on my hands!)

I'm not surprised the grandparents went out together. It often happens that way.

Yes, that's true. When my mom's mom died, her husband (my grandpa) died less than 3 months later. It was really, really hard on my mom.

So far, thankfully, my dad's mom is heading towards two-years past her second husband's death. Although, I think my dad being there with her probably helps her keep going longer.

My DH's grandparents went within one week. The grandpa on Christmas Eve and the grandma on New Years Eve. I'd like to go that way though.

I guess that might be the easier way to go for the couple, but unless both are really sick, I imagine it might be more difficult for the family.

"This same person told me that he refuses to do anything other than sit and watch the gym, do towels, etc."

I smell a promotion for you here. E sounds like he needs all hands on deck, and if the gym is going through a rough patch, the sit-in-er is dead wood.

Yes. I agree with Baselle. You are the one with a future there. That other person will probably either quit or get a poor evaluation and be forced out. I supervise 9 part-timers and that is how it usually goes. Does the boss have an assistant who can write checks, etc. for him if he happens to be ill or out of town?

Ha! A promotion without any raise, maybe. Smile To put it bluntly, the gym isn't making enough money to cover payroll as it is. If things don't get better soon, they may have to close one of the locations. If that happens, I'm hoping that the fact that I am willing to go above and beyond minimum expecations, will help me keep my hours as is.

According to E, his parents (the owners of the three locations) have been operating at a loss. They started the gyms as an outreach program. We got cut off from that conversation before I could ask more.

Oh, and the sitter/no-doer, is an 87 year old man who works at the gym to supplement his retirement.

    crazyliblady,

No, the owners are the only ones who write checks. E, their son, just gets to take all the flack from the gym workers when our checks bounce, or we can't cash them when they're written, not to mention the flack from gym members who get incorrect invoices, etc.

The mom is in some kind of sales, and the dad used to be much more involved, but the past year or so has done something with college football (coaching I think) and is getting another degree in something or another. They have a 2 1/2 year old son (a surprise!) which E gets the pleasure of babysitting 4 mornings a week - which is really helpful to him when trying to get gym business done.

I understand the frustration with the bloggy stuff. That is why I quit my Wordpress blog. I just could'nt figure it out. Still thinking about trying one on Blogger.

    Boo,

I like the blogger platform. If you decide to go with it, feel free to ask me if you need any help.

    BA,

    Yes, it was very nice.

I think I've figured out what I'm going to do with it. There aren't any new movies out that I feel are worth paying $9+ to see. But, there are two movies out at the dollar theater I'm interested in.

So .... I'm thinking of a dollar movie (New In Town); eat at the Noodle Bar (Thai food - yummy!); get a mani/pedi; and finally, a haircut. If there's anything left after all that, then I'll put it towards a new pair of running shoes. Big Grin
