Uh Oh! Earthquake!

January 10th, 2009 at 02:08 am

I can only say this now, since there wasn't much damage done and there was no loss of life (as far as I know at least) but someone asked me in a previous blog entry if the Mobile Home was on a fault line.

Apparently the answer is, if it's not ON one, it is NEAR one!

I talked to my dad this afternoon, and he told me that they had experienced an earthquake on Thursday evening! It was only a 4.5 or so, but it's epicenter was in San Bernadino which is near Loma Linda.

Even though he'd lived in CA when he was younger (late high-school/college) this was his first earthquake. He said it felt like an explosion or a large crash.

Ugh. Some one thinks I want to hear their rap Rolleyes music. They're sitting out in the parking lot with their windows open and car stereo loud.

It would be nice to have some kind of electronics scrambler to point at vehicles of people who insist on sharing their version of music with the world. *evil laugh*

(Someone must have said something, the decibels moved down a couple notches -though I can still hear it.)

Today was a no spend day. Smile

E asked me if I'd like to take over opening the gym on Monday mornings. I told him that I had made a promise to myself not to do more than one morning a week (unless an emergency.) That my exercise routine just suffered too much when I did the extra shifts. He was understanding. -- The extra $13/wk sure would be nice, but my workout days are already reduced to just Monday to Th - not worth $13/wk to lose another morning.

yup that was me asking about fault lines. I used to live in CA, and my rental property is in San Fran. Smile

I think everyone in Cali is "near" a fault line. Hehe. Well, not everyone, but most people. How near is near? I grew up near the San Andreas fault. We're not "near" any faults in Sacramento, but a couple hundred miles from one can cause significant damage, on the other hand. So basically, no quakes here, but still concerns about damage from one.

I remember a LOT of earthquakes in the 80s (Bay Area) but it has way leveled off since the Loma Prieta quake. Can't say how it is in Southern Cali...

    Gamecock,

Sorry about that! I couldn't remember for sure and then I got a call . . . so wanted to get my post finished, so didn't look back at my previous entry.

That was a good question. Smile
    MonkeyMama,

Heh. Big Grin How near is near? I'd say anywhere close enough to where you fell even a small shake is quite near enough!

Before I got my first teaching job in CA, I *swore* I would NEVER live in CA. The reason? Earthquakes - especially 'The Big One'. It was just too funny that of three job offers I got, two of them were in CA - so much for the NEVER part. Smile

Earthquakes (and tornadoes) scare me the most since there is no real warning for them and the little warning you do get doesn't give you much time to prepare. I think that is why I prefer New England...there is always a fair amount of warning before snowstorms and hurricanes.

    Koppur,

Here in DFW we get tornadoes sometimes. It can be kind of scary hearing the sirens going off. Fortunately I've not had any tornadoes touch down anywhere that affected me directly. (Knock on wood.)

I lived in Joshua Tree when the 9.7 Landers earthquake hit years ago...it was like a locomotive was running through our house. It was very, very scary. Ive been in many, many earthquakes and NEVER got used to them! Dont miss them one bit!

    About 10 minutes before the
Text is Nisqually quake and Link is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nisqually_Earthquake
Nisqually quake hit, I was typing and idly thinking, "I wonder how fast I could get under my desk." Turns out pretty darn fast. During the first millisecond I thought that it was a very large semi that needed a new muffler, then the rumblings continued for about a minute. I was listening to my boss (different one than I have now) TOTALLY freak out. We were on the north edge of Pioneer Square...we moved our office 1/2 block further north. Management said that they weren't moving because of the earthquake, but it was. Smile Oh yes, did you know that Mt. Rainier is a dormant (not dead) volcano? Looking forward to surviving that too.

earthquake...smurkquake.....you learn to know which ones you need to get under a doorway for....and the ones you don't even have to get out of bed... Now tornadoes that is another story. This summer I was at YD's in NC and I think I stayed up all night with the tornado watch watching TV, listening to the wind...being scared.

Wow Thrifty Ray, Basselle and homebody! Ya'll have had way more experience with earthquakes than I ever hope to have.
