Jaw Pain OUCH!

April 9th, 2007 at 12:40 pm

Anyone know a good way to reduce jaw/tooth pain other than tylenol, etc? I went to the dentist on Friday and he did an xray of the left side of my mouth and couldn't figure out why it's hurting me so much. He's referred me to a specialist who I am going to call today to try to get an appointment with. I've not been sleeping very well - it tends to get very bad at night just as I lay down trying to go to sleep. Right now it's hurting so bad I feel nauseous - and I tend to have a very strong stomach. I've been living on tylenol and tylenol pm for nearly a week now, though it really hasn't helped much. The pain starts in my upper jaw/gums and resonates all the way up my head to the back of my left eye - so much so that I can hardly bear to keep it open. I don't get migraines, but if I did, I think this is pretty close to what maybe a mild one would feel like. The pain comes and goes without warning - no real rhyme or reason that I've been able to figure out yet.

I really hope I can figure something out other than tylenol, etc to take because I know it isn't good to take a lot of that stuff over time - and it isn't really helping that much anyway. I'm losing sleep and my concentration at work is suffering as well.

Sorry mostly this is a rant I guess - but if anyone has any advice on a way to help the pain go away I'd really appreciate it. I usually have a really big pain threshhold - this is reaching my max plus some.

My mother's jaw hurts when her sinuses and ear acts up. Could you be having a sinus problem? Perhaps an infection in one of the sinuses of the face? Hope you feel better really soon!

Thanks - You know you're the second person who mentioned it could be a sinus infection. I got an appointment with my regular doctor tomorrow - I'll definitely have that checked out - although I really don't think that's the case.

Well, here is a third person to say it could be sinus pain. I know three people who have this problem. It comes and goes over the years for them and is not always possible to distinguish from dental pain. I might also see an MD about the problem.

It may also be your trigeminol (sp) nerve. My dad has that, but it does'nt sound like it. I hope you find out soon! Maybe try switching to Ibprofin or Motrin instead of Tylenol?

I agree with getting yourself checked for sinus problems. maybe try using a humidifier to see if that helps at all. How about a washcloth, slight wet and cooled in the freezer for a few minutes before bed....Good luck and hope this gets cleared up soon.

Thanks everyone! I set an appt with my reg doctor for tomorrow morning (had one for Friday, but changed it). I also got an appt with the TMJ specialist for MAY 15! His first available time. Hopefully though it's just an infection of some sort and can be cleared up with antibiotics. I've never heard of that before myself, but am hoping that that is the case!

    Again, thanks!

Yep, TMJ, thats what my dad has. But instead of being constant ache, it is a constant stabbing or shooting pain , like when he chews or laughts.

I used to get really bad jaw aches. Turned out I was grinding my teeth like a fiend. Not just at night but when I was driving. My dentist made me a night guard, I sleep with it and use it when driving and it has helped a lot. On the few occassions when it wasn't from teeth grinding, I'd ask my chiropractor if he could do anything for jaw pain and he'd use and activator on the place just below the ear where the jaw starts and it relieved the painful pressure. Just two possible alternative options.
